Port Tree ‘Peat Expert on Art Repair
Mr. Peat studies a cracked 500-year-old painting.

How to Wash Picture Faces
A picture, like a small boy, eventually needs its face washed. And like a small boy, some one must do it firmly, thoroughly and scientifically.
However, the wear and tear on
a picture demands that any minis-
trations be started only after a good deal of study.
Wilbur D. Peat, Herron Art Museum director, will undertake to explain at the Museum tomorrow night the diagnosis of a picture to the Art Association membership. So far as is known, this is the first time any museum director has given a lecture on the delicate procedure of taking care of objects of art. The reason is that some one might misinterpret . instructions or make a mistaken diagnosis and do considerable damage to a valuable piece. 8 : About the only: time one can safely wash a painting with mild soap
and water is when the surface is|a
protected fully by finish varnish. If there are cracks in the varnish, then a dry cleaner must be used. When paintings are chipped or cracked or blistered, they should be treated only by full-time experts who know what to do and how to do it. Mr, Peat said that the smokeladen Indianapolis atmosphere is especially hard on paintings because the chemical reaction between smoke and paint frequently pocks the picture. Ordinarily, a face-washing once every three or four years is enough for a painting in perfect condition, with frequent soft-cloth dry cleanings in between, he said. When a painting cracked, it has to be sent to an expert for surgery, Mr. Peat said.
