BOOKEXPLAINS WAGE-HOUR ACT
Employment Service Office - Distributes Copies of Publication.
A booklet explaining the Fair Labor Standards Act, a wage-hour law, which becomes effective Monday, may be obtained at the Indianapolis office of the Indiana
State Employment Service, 148 E. Market St., George J. Smith, district manager, said today. “The Employment Service personnel cannot undertake to interpret the law or answer questions with respect to its administration,” Mr. Smith said. “The sole function of the Employment Service in this matter is to make a supply of these publications available tc interested persons.”
Elmer F. Andrews, wage-hour administrator, has announced that Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin will have their wage-hour headquarters in Chicago, but Employment Service officials said they have not yet been notified of its establishment or the appointment of a regional director.
LAND COST BAR RAISED BY USHA
$1.50 Per Square Foot Limit Not Inflexible, Straus Declares.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 (U. P.)— Administrator Straus of the U. S. Housing Authority said today that the Government will lend communities one-third of the funds neces-
sary to acquire lands for low-rental housing projects in instances where land costs are above the standard 1.50 per square foot limitation established by the Authority. Mr, Straus said reports that the Housing Authority will not provide more than $1.50 per square foot for land acquisitation costs are not correct. “It is ready to go further than that,” he said. “In cases where the local authority believes that it is wise and sound policy to pay higher prices for land, the USHA will bear part of the excess cost. “The figure that has tentatively been discussed is that one-third of this excess shall be borne by the USHA and two-thirds by the locality.” The $1.50 limitation on purchase
of land for projects has been in effect for about a year. Today's action to broaden the limitation will assist local housing authorities in construction of projects, Mr. Straus said.
The action was In response to a statement by Alfred N. Rheinstein,
New York City Housing Authority
chairman. Mr, Rheinstein said that the limitation would seriously endanger housing projects in New York City. New York has under discussio with the Authority a contemplated East Side low cost project. To date New York City has received 30 million dollars for construction of projects and has an additional 23 million dollars in earmarkings outstanding. .
