The infant and maternal death| rates have remained at a high level,

ties have bsen tripled in the past 30 years, Dr. McLeod said. Physicians rely upon nurses for almost everything and “have been relieved of too many of their duties, too much of their responsibilities and do not make adequate use of their knowledge,” he asserted. The Unitéd States with 15,000 maternal deaths and 85,0000 infant deaths each year has the worst record of any civilized country, Dr. Mcsaid, The trouble may be charged to a lack of conscientiousness, he said, and the only solution is -to overcome “indifference and cupidity” and use “patience and common sense.” Dr. Pearl Thompson of St. Louis told the convention that “food fadism often excites people to overvigorous dieting and among other things causes them to rob themselves of vital vitamins.” “One of the greatest present day menaces of normal eating is the misinformation which the public is

given on acid and alkaline diets,” . Thompson said. ;
