CHICAGO DREAM OF NEW SUBWAY ‘NEARS REALITY
PWA Grant Makes Possible Transport System Sought For 35 Years.
CHICAGO, Oct. 14 (U. P.).—For 35 years Chicago has dreamed of a subway system similar to that of other big cities throughout the world.
The dream finally is nearing reality as a result of President Roosevelt’s approval of an 18 million dollar PWA grant, which removed the last obstacle in the way of a 40 million dollar tube transit system underlying the “Loop” and serving the area to the south, north and north-

west of it. The city has agreed to provide the remaining $22,000,000. Since 1903, a “subway for Chica20” has been a plank in the platform of virtually every mayoral candidate. A subterranean transportation system had been sought since then in the hope of relieving the congestion on surface traction lines. News that the PWA grant had been given Presidential approval was received jubilantly by City officials, citizens and businessmen.
Start About Dec. 1
Mayor Edward J. Kelly said that construction of the eight-mile subway system, expected to start about Dec. 1 and be completed by the middle of 1940, would be a boom to Chicago business, PWA officials estimated that more than 7000 men would be employed on the project itself with as many more workers engaged in producing materials for the subway. When construction is completed, Chicago will have two subway levels—one 17 feet underground and a double-track tunnel 35 feet below the surface. The largest loading platform will be 4000 feet long.
