By JANE STAFFORD (Copyright. 1938. bv Science Service) WASHINGTON, Oct. 14.—For the relief of sinus disease sufferers - throughout the country, medical - science now offers vaccination of . the lining of the sick sinus itself. This treatment, so new it is said to be “dazzling” ear, nose and throat specialists attending the meeting here of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, was described by Dr. Frank J. Novak Jr, of Chicago. A pig step toward preventing

sinus disease in future generations can be taken with the aid of dentists, Dr. Novak said. Children between the ages of four and six years should be taken to the dentist who straightens teeth to have their palates inspected and any deformity corrected. This will prevent the “one-two-three hook-up” which Dr. Novak sees as a prime cause of sinus disease. The deformed palate (1) leads to deformity of the nose (2) which prevents adequate ventilation and drainage through the nose,

(3) which is one of the main factors in causing sinus disease. Glandular disturbance is often the cause of so-called winter hayfever or the constant, noninfectious colds that make many persons, especially children, miserable with running noses and sneezing.
These sufferers can be rid of their trouble within 24 hours when given doses of thyroid gland extract and calcium lactate, Dr. Novak said, although the treatment must be continued for a long time. This treatment is used Yor cases which

are not due to allergy or supersensitiveness to special foods, dusts, pollens or the like. : Conservatism in operating for relief of sinus disease was stressed both by Dr. Novak and by Dr. Frederick T. Hill of Waterville, Me.
Thorough study of the patient,
and his history, and careful exam-
ination of his sinuses, including X-ray pictures, must be made before deciding to operate, Dr. Hill emphasized. Even then, the surgeon should do no more operating than is necessary, keeping the patient’s
point of view in mind as well as the. condition of sinuses.
Dysentery Imperils Millions, Is Claim
By Science Service DURHAM, N. C, Oct. 14.—The lives and health of millions of people in this country are endangered by the germs of amebic dysentery, two Tulane University Medical School professors reported at the
Duke University medical symposium here today. Amebic dysentery was a matter of nation-wide concern when an epidemic of it, causing many deaths, sflicted visitors to the Chicago World's Fair and residents of
the city in 1933.
From 5 to 10 per cent of the population of the country is infected with the germ or parasite of this disease, Dr. Charles Franklin Craig declared. In some parts of the country from 30 to 40 per cent
of the population is infected with the germ, Endamoeba histolytica. Liver abscess, resulting from this inféction, may afféct from 300,000 to 600,000 persons in the United States, Drs, Alton Ochsner and Michael DeBakey reported as a conservative estimate,
Since liver abscess represents only about one-half of the complications of the condition that require surgical attention, the Tulane surgeons estimated that from 500,000 to 1,-
