Harold Dahl, Still in Spanish Prison Hospital, Hopes for F reedom, Writes on Daily Life

(Harold E. Dahl, 28, of Champaign, Ill, who was shot down and captured by Nationalists while fighting for the Loyalist forces in Spain more than a year ago, tells of his life as a prisoner in Salamanca. Dahl was condemned to death but reprieved by Generalissimo Francisco Franco. Later his blond wife, Edith Dahl, an entertainer, sent her picture to Gen. Franco with a plea for his release.—Editor’s Note).

By HAROLD E. DAHL Written for United Press SALAMANCA, Spain, Oct. 13.— The start of a typical day is at 8:15 a. m. when the “monja” (nun)

brings my coffee and roll to my room.

Following breakfast, out of bed,

a quick bath and then ga little walking exercise in the garden of the hospital. The morning Spanish newspaper generally arrives about 9:30 a. m., and the next hour is spent reading the latest news of the war and a few scattered news items of the other countries.

Lunch is served at 1 p. m. and

normally consists of a soup, salad

and a meat course and including, of course, fruit and wine. After lunch a short rest, followed by a sun bath in the garden and

a shower afterward. From then until dinner, reading and studying (that is if there are any books or magazines available). Dinner is at 7:45 p. m., and is as follows: Soup, beans, eggs, meat, fruit, wine and coffee. Then reading or studying, but if there is no material at hand, then more exercise in the garden or chatting with the chaps who cannot leave ltheir beds. Eleven o’clock usually finds me in bed or writing letters.

Some long hours are passed by playing dominos or “siete y media,” a game resembling blackjack. Writ-

ing also occupies part of my time because I am keeping a complete set of notes. My Spanish, I am sorry to admit, is still bad. I can understand nearly perfectly but the grammar construction makes it difficult for me to speak perfect “castellano.” However, everyone understands me and I understand them. As for friends, it is hard to imagine that I was once an enemy of this part of Spain. I count among my friends, several legionnaires, people of the air service, civilians and of the countless soldiers I have met during my 15

months here in Salamanca. It is a very rare occasion when I am rlaced in an embarrassing position regarding my having been with the Reds. I have lots of friends and their treatment of me is fine. : I am allowed to receive money from my wife. She sends me checks from the American Express

‘Co. in Paris which are in dollars

and are changed into pesetas here in Salamanca. The rate of exchange is 10 pesetas and 68 centimos to the dollar. This exchange has

remained the same during my 15 months in Salamanca. My wife is in Paris, but is planning to return to England to fulfill contracts. Insofar as I know, she has been unable to accomplish anything toward my release, but I am of the opinion that she is still trying, even though every possible angle seems to have been exhausted. All my efforts and plans are toward obtaining my freedom, which naturally is the most important thing to me at the present. Up to and including July, 1937 (the month I fell), the republican

government owed me $13,650. Of

this amount $9025 has been paid. That leaves a balance of $4,625 that remains unpaid. Then according to

the contract I should be paid $500 a

month while I am held as a prisoner of war. For the past 15 months they have not paid anything to me or my wife (to whom the money normally was paid). If I could have collected only what was due me for services rendered, I would have been content. It was on the promise of payment of all the money due that I returned to Spain from France, after my operation. So all in all, the $9025 represents two

years, which isn’t so much, based on a contract of $1,500 a month. As a prisoner I am treated with consideration. I do not have pers mission to visit the cinemas, bulle fights and other distractions. I am confined to the hospital, but I am free to walk in the garden and to visit different parts of the hospital. On March 15, 1938, I was escort= ed on a tour of Salamanca for three hours.
