Civic Theater Ready For Season Opening;
Orchestra Aids Meet
“Small Miracle” . to Open Tomorrow Night; ‘Sevitzky “Delighted” by Symphony Commit- _ - tee’s Work, He Says in Telegram.
By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON .
: There are times when the temptation to indulge in the dangerous habit of prognostication gets ‘the best of
one’s native caution. But when all the auguries are fav- ~ ‘orable, as in the case of the Civic Theater’s opening to-
morrow evening, discretion goes to the winds. So, with-
~ out a qualm, we predict unqualified success. “Small Miracle,” which combines delicious humor and a universal human interest appeal, is to be presented on one of the largest and most sophisticated sets yet executed by Michael Mielnik, stage technician. The entire action takes place in a modern “super” theater lobby with indirect lighting and stunning furnishings borrowed from Mr. and : Point. Mrs. Griffith is a member of the properties committee, of which Mrs. John Beard Washburn is chairman. Mesdames George M. Hoster, L. J. Shappert, Howard B. Pelham and Urban K. Wilde are also committee members. :
Edward Steinmetz Jr., director, has chosen a cast of 25, ranging
from veterans of the Civic’s boards to youngsters who are making
their fisst appearances. Sara Lauter is appearing in her 24th: Civic role; William Cook, always associated with comedy parts, is on for the 12th time and Fanchon Fattig is making her 10th appearance. Other seasoned players include Myles Sweeney, who during two years on the West Coast participated in Los Angeles theatrical productions; Louis Stauber, who has played in New England; Adrian Reiter, Harold H. Arnholter, Sydney Sanner, Leslie Aye, James " McDaniel, James McLemore, Garrett Olds, Eugene McManamon and
Lawrence Ernst. : Co Regular Rehearsals for The “Mob”
Among the neophytes are port speech prize at Wellesley College and appeared in Barnswallows productions there last year; Evelyn Steffen and Eleanor Hazen, graduates of the Children’s Theater: Jane Carter, whose theatrical debut was made in Tudor Hall plays; Jayne Sumner, who's been studying drama at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory; Mrs. Thomas Scanlon, J. B. Cusick, Leander King, Jane Howe and Elizabeth Ruddick. Mrs. R. Kirby Whyte is stage manager. To ensure a smooth performance (and to keep the extras from prancing like a bunch of Shetland ponies on the stage) Mr. Steinmetz has initiated: the practice of holding regular rehearsals for the “mob” scenes only. Incidentally, he is discovering new future productions by thus concentrating on the “supers.” Costumes, chosen under the direction of Mrs. Edward E. Gates Jr., Mrs. George T. Parry and Mrs. William Coleman Atkins, doubtless will give the spectators a few pointers on what the well-dressed theatrical patron will wear this winter. Even the theater has a new frock for the gala evening. Don’t fail to observe the new grass and evergreen trees and new paint outside and during the entr’acte be sure to take in the ciel blue of the foyer.
Greetings to Symphony Committee To add an extra note of brilliance to Mrs. Frederic M. Ayres’ gracious hospitality and Mrs. Earl B. Barnes’ sparkling program of songs at the tea for members of the women’s committee of the Indiana State Symphony Society yesterday, Fabien Sevitzky sent the following characteristic telegram: “My heartiest greetings to the president of the women’s committee. I am delighted to hear of your splendid accomplishment. It is very difficult at this time for me to express in, the words my gratitude. I hope that before we start season our both concerts will be sold out. Best regards to all of you.” After welcoming 200 women’s committee members at Woodstock
Club, Mrs. Ayres, president, reviewed the work of the committee - since the entire membership last met a year ago. Mr. Sevitzky and
members of the orchestra have more than fulfilled the promises made at that meeting, she said. She also paid tribute to Ferdinand Schaefer, orchestra founder and conductor emeritus. In outlining the work now being done she mentioned as new this season the Junior Auxiliary, a group doing motor corps, telephoning and clerical work under the direction of Miss Helen Sheerin. A low bowl of yellow, apricot and deep pink cactus dahlias formed the centerpiece on the tea table at which Mrs. Albert J, Beveridge Jr., Mrs. John K. Ruckelshaus and Mrs. Conrad Ruckelshaus poured.” A tall white urn filled wi . white chrysanthemums, cosmos and daisies decorated the ballroom where the musical program was given. : -
Out-of-Town Members Attend a
Mrs. Ayres received her guests in a ‘simple black sheer wool gown with three-quarter length sleeves and a black chenille hat. Mrs. Barnes’ long black gown with short-sleeved bolero was fashioned of narrow bands of crepe. . Among the out-of-town committee members present were Mesdames William H. Ball, Victor Hutzel, Thomas J. Turk, Frank Hanley and John F. Banta, Muncie; the Misses Clementine Miller and Elsie Sweeney, Columbus; Mrs. Macy Teetor, New Castle; Mrs. Hugh Patten, Frankfort: Mrs. George Jaqua, Winchester; Mrs. Paul Durham, Kokomo, and Mrs. Joseph McCord and Miss Edna Bowles, Greencastle.
