[PACE g LIFT STANDARDS OF INDIANA BAR, LEADER PLEADS
Rid Profession of ‘Those y
Who Bring Discredit, ~ Hill Asks in Talk.
William- H. Hill, Vincennes, Indiana Bar Association president, today had called upon Hoosier lawyers “to police themselves, at “public demand,” so that the profession’s ' standards will be raised. _ He spoke last night before the Indianapolis Bar Association in the Columbia Club and said that racketeering, tricky and ambulancechasing lawyers must be eliminated “to restore public confidence in the legal profession.” “The profession today has mo adequate power to rid itself of those who bring the profession into disrepute except by individual or group insistence and publicity,” he said.
* «Lack Adequate Power”
“We do not have adequate power to. reprimand, to suspend, or even to disbar unfaithful practitioners. What we need is a positive position taken by us; a pasition—which will move forward to rid the profession of those individuals who bring it discredit; those who for gain use their ability and training as lawyers to thwart justice; those who spend their energies to defeat the proper administration of justice under the cloak of loyalty to clients, . «The - Indianapolis Bar Association has taken an advanced position on this subject. If we expect this state and nation to remain a government by law and not of men and that justice shall be adminjstered alike to rich and poor, it is essential we have a judicial system presided over by capable judges, jearned in the law, without commitments to any political group or class. . “The proper administration of justice in Indiana requires ‘that | judges shall not be made political | footballs, - but that qualification | alone shall be the determining | factor in their selection.”
