Rolling Ridge and Ft. Harrison Players Popularize Fast Pastime: Matches Draw Crowds of 4000.

Pony polo in Indianapolis is no longer merely a “400” affair. At least once this summer it has been a 4000 affair. Several years ago the expensive automobiles of the wealthier fans | barely filled one side of the field. | § Lately, the cars—with a liberal sprinkling from the low-priced field— | have been packed three Geep on each side. { Robert Hassler would enjoy seethat. He would find quite a contrast betweer his season’ games and the ones he played in back in 1919 on a field that is now the center of the Speedway race track. Alfred Buck, Conrad Ruckelshaus | and Maj. Maraist have three-goal ratings while Mr. Sutphin, Maj. E. A. Williams and Tom Ruckelshaus hold two-goal ratings. Players Shift Positions

One reason for polos increasing popularity is that it’s simple to understand. There are four players on each team. No. 1 and No. 2 players | are offensive men. No. 3 man tries to get the ball! away from the other team and pass it to his forwards. No. 4 defends in the backfield. i If No. 4 finds himself in No. 1 position, down by his own goal,

Builds Two Fields

The following year Mr. Hassler spent a considerable sum in build-| ing the two fields at Rolling Ridge Polo Club. He was dissatisfied with the Speedway turf and, at that time, it was too far from the city. Several others, among them Samuel Sutphin and Charles Schaf, then took an interest in the game. The officers at Ft. Harrison always provided opposition to the Rolling Ridge riders. There were Capt. Junior Reed, Lieut. James
