Battle in Twelve Games
Purdue Eleven Tackles Powerful Gophers as Layden Team
Goes to Atlanta; Ind
iana at Champaign.
By LEO DAUGHERTY Seventeen state teams in action!
An even dozen touchdown struggles! Scenes of combat all the way from Atlanta, Ga.
to Washington,
D. C., and Buffalo, N. Y. over to Champaign, Tl. and back to Indiana!
And the Illini, the Gophers of Minnesota and the Yellow Jackets of
Georgia Tech among the foes! That's the football abundance to claim the Hoosier fans’ attention | this week-end. The action starts | tonight at the nation’s capital where the Butler Bulldogs are to be unleashed against the George Washlington Colonials at Griffith Stadium.
THE BUNK (8) Times Special, WASHINGTON, D. C, Oct. 7.— The Butler football team visited the White House teday and following lunch Coach Tony Hinkle tucked them in bed, explaining that he thought sleep would be better than signal practice. “You see,” he said, “22 of our boys never had ridden on a Pullman car before and they were all night figuring out how to sleep best in those bunks. That put them a little behind so I thought a nap would do them good.”
Butler will make only one change in the starting lineup, the recuperated Frank Welton taking Tossing Tom Harding's place in the backfield. Illinois has beaten Indiana 12 times, has limited them to ties in two games and has lost only three. It has been 39 years since the Crimson has won a game at Illinois. Indiana won at Bloomington last year, 13 to 6. Indiana might be a little stronger in reserves if fullback Joe Tofil| were not out with an injury. But then there is Capt. Paul Graham | for the job, along with Ray Dumke, | and Eddie Herbert could be transferred there from quarter, While Jim Logan from Indianapolis will be at right guard for the | Crimson, Wes Martin, also from here, will occupy the same post for | Illini. Four Illini players starting
“| their first Big Ten game are Tom
Riggs, tackle; George Rettinger, fullback; Cliff Peterson, halfback, and George Bernhardt. | Let out a big umph! as you look | at Purdue's Western Conference assignment— those Golden Gophers Bf Minnesota. ‘Purdue's starting backfield likely | will include Ted Hennis, Jack | Brown, Lou Brock and the driving | Tony Ippolito. Allen Shackleton, | Mike Byelene, Jim Nesbitt and Tony Juska are second choices. Cocap-
and Nebraska, no doubt will depend chiefly on passing, but his own | running attack is not to be sneezed
‘at when it's decided to mix up the
ground-gaining strategy. Surprising, but Elmer Layden will have to wire back to South Bend if he needs more than 33 Irish against the Yellow Jackets at Atlanta. He's taking only that “small” squad to Dixie, But the 33 are the gridiron cream and the boys who did most of the great playing in the 52-0 baliering of Kansas. DePauw's Tigers take on a new one in Lawrence Tech of Detroit at Greencastle—the only college game in the district. The invaders had better be prztty good because Gaumy Neal appears to have a club with a lot of steam. It's up to top strength. Hanover’'s Panthers, who have trotted out with a zip that wasn't entirely expected, have lured the Central Normal Teachers into their own den and it looks like a spanking for the future professors. They've been shutout twice, while Hanover has beaten Wabash and will send the same crew against the Teachers, Hanover won last year, 19 to 7. A Panther victory would put them
in a three-way tie for Indiana Conference leadership with Ball State and Manchester, both of whom are not playing loop games. More teachers will argue it out at Muncie where the Ball State Cardinals should prove the football tutor to Indiana State's Sycamores. Maggié Magnabasco’s Cardinals have shown their power in two games while the Sycamores have been cut down twice. Ball State won last, 7 to 0. Pete Vaughan’'s Little Giants of Wabash ought to win one tomorrow. They gd down to Evansville and look to have the edge over the Purple Aces who haven't scored in two 1938 games. Wabash did it a year ago, 19 to 0. The Franklin Grizzlies go to Richmond to try to avenge last vear’s 18-to-13 lacing of Earlham! Quakers. Manchester's play Buffalo. The Valparaiso Uhlans play St. Joseph's at Collegeville. They beat the Cardinals 20 to 12 last year. Rose Poly.

WASHINGTON FROSH DEFEAT CATHEDRAL
The Washington High School] freshman football team defeated the] Cathedral frosh in a rough and tumble tilt at the West Side field yesterday, 6 to 0. The two teams played on an even basis until the second quarter when
three successful passes to the 10vard line from King to Stonehouse of Washington brought the ball into scoring position. Jones plunged through the line for the necessary vardage and the only score of the game. King's attempted line plunge for the extra point was unsuccessful.
