Editor of Advance HERE was a time when most] religious people, young and old, and many who were not religious, were familiar with the Ten Commandments. Great emphasis was laid upon the memorizing and teaching of them in Sunday Schools, and also in public schools in countries where there was provision for religious instruction. It might be surprising today to discover how many people, even inj the religious community, could not] name or identify the various Com-| mandments. It is true that they might have a knnowledge of their substance, but would they have the familiarity with them that was common a generation ago? If one wished to test this matter out, he might ask the various re-| ligious people such questions as, “What is the fifth Commandment?” or “What is the sixth Commandment?” It might be amazing to discover how few could give an intelligent answer. There are Christians who might

the Commandments on the plea] that the Commandments have been abrogated in the larger teachings of | Jesus, and that they are after all only a part of a more extensive] Jewish law which no Christian, so|

lis to be conducted by Mrs. Cora far as we are aware, regards today | Downs Stevens and the mission | | study books for all ages are to be]

in other details as binding upon the | Christian conscience. The answer to this would be that]

they have, and ought to have, all the force of commandments. These set before us, not the conception of measured conduct and measured duty, but the conception of a man so living under the power of the love of God that it is his supreme desire to attain and express all that he can of love and goodness. Nothing less than that in our lives can constitute the law of Christ, for that law is a law of love.
