U. S. Senator VanNuys is to speak {at Logansport, and is to share speak- | ing honors with Senator Minton at! Ft. Wayne, it was“announced. The! two Senators have not previously appeared together at district rallies. Members of the Democratic State ticket are to be introduced at both meetings, and a special homecoming {ceremony has been arranged for In- 3 diana Supreme Court Judge Michael Fansler at Logansport. Homer Stonebraker, Democrat® nominee for Congress from the Second Dis- | trict, also is to speak. A two-mile torch light parade through the Istreets of Logansport is to precede the meeting. Congressman James I. Farley and Harry Gottschalk, Democratic nomi-| g nee for Maver of Ft. Wavne. are to 1 take part in the Fourth District! rally. Party leaders indicated they were particularly anxious for a large attendance at these meetings, since early surveys indicate the Democrats will face strong opposition in both districts. |

Senator Minton Defends Public Spending
Times Specin | AUBURN, Sept. 20 —The strong- § est guarantee against war is to build |g {up national ‘economic and social security, U. S. Senator Minton declared at a Democratic rally here last night. | “We spent more than 45 billions in the World War, killing and maiming young men and destroving wealth, and no one ever said a word about he said “Tt was all right for these calamity howlers to spend billions of @ollars for war. They didn't mind a deficit then. They didn’t care about an nnbalanced budget, neither did thay care about your boy, from whose sweat and blood, torment and suf- | fering, they were coining filthy Qollars into war profits. “Tf the United States could afford to spend billions to destroy life {and property in the conduct of a | war, it can afford ‘to spend a Tew wil lion dollars that precious human | ln Show { life can be saved from suffering and Masarvk Stadium in Praha has been appropriated as a refuge for thowsands of Czech citizens forced starvation.” * ! to Jeave their homes. BOONVILLE MAN TO DIE TONIGHT
Young Killer of Wife and Baby Faces Death in Electric Chair.
MICHIGAN CITY, Sept. 28 (U. P.) —Henry Noelke, 32, Boonville mechanic who Killed his wife and daughter, will be electrocuted tonight in the State Prison | under the same terms of committment which gained James Reid Swain, Evansville, a reprieve. Swain was granted a Tai stay on the basis of a technicality in his committment papers.
The committment papers of both Swain and Noelke direct former Warden Louis E. Kunkel to carry lout their electrocution. Alfred O.
t Dowd replaced Mr. Kunkel as war- |
den before the execution, however, ! land Swain’s attorney alleged the | papers were drawn incorrectly. Dowd conferred with Indiana At- | torney General Omer Stokes Jack- | ison last night and said: i | “The Attorney General feels that [the committment paper technically |
\used by Swains attorney was al
: means to accomplish an end—to|
gain time to obtain a new trial in | Vanderburghh County. Ther:afore, | |we are going through with the Noelke execution, barring, of course, a court order or intervention by the Governor.” | | The State contends the papers, ‘are a committment to Kunkel as warden and not as an individual, and therefore Dowd, as warden, legally assumes the execution au- | thority. | Noelke has been in death row nearly a year. He was convicted of shooting his wife and 22- month-
old daughter in August, 1937.
