The Cardinals are groomed and ready blocker. Bill Davies and John clash in the first struggle of the autumn for both at Indianapolis Sat-
urday. [Bulldogs are overlooking them and the following Saturday makers into submission. “I'm satisfied,” said Coach John (Maggie) Magnabasco. But in the next breath he expressed fear. “Look how light. They look like a high school team.” | He has a couple of 205-pounders. several in the 190s, but the rest of | the 39, for the most part, are in the {light-heavyweight class or under. | Tall End On Crutches Another woe here is the incapacitation of Johnny Eckley, “Maggie's” tall left end from Detroit. He's {standing on crutches on the sidejlines with a busted foot predicting that his mates will send the Bulldogs scampering back to their kennel. The injury will keep him ont of uniform for at least another three weeks. Magnabasco hasn't
made up his
mind about the starting lineup for
the opener. He's drafted what he terms a “paper” lineup for use on the programs, but like the radio | programs, it's subject to change without notice. That lineup has Hubert Etchinson and Kenneth Wasson at the ends The latter is a letterman from Indianapolis. Thorval Mattox and | Ralph Peterson, both lettermen and two of the biggest on the squad, are slated as tackles. Davidson Is Star Jimmy Davidson, one of his very best, and Gabor Tackats are likely guard starters. Mike Milakovie, chunky Hammond lad, is first string center. Dale Miller is to be at quarter, Jimmy Phend and Owen [Fisher at the halves, and Walter Pesavento at fullback. Phend, only a sophomore, but All-State quarterback when he was at Goshen High School, is the only newcomer in the backfield. He looks like the speed merchant of the team and is a shifty side stepper. Phendc¢ is the prize booter on the campus. He gets away fast, long Kicks off his left foot. There isn't any marked superiority by any of the backs when it comes to passing. Coach Magnabasco has others to call on in the event he changes his announced lineup or anv of those starters need replacement, Norman Coglan, sophomore quarterback from Bicknell, mav be in the fracas by reason of his passing ability. Garland Frazier, senior from the same town, might get some backfield employment because he, too, can pass and is one
Harold Carlson backfield berth. Dick Stealy, Goshen sophomore, is rangy, weighs 194, and has the second call at center. John Carbone is a sophomore in classes, but doesn’t give a sophomore performance on the football field and may get end work. He was an AilState choice when at Peru High School. Ernie Sample sticks out as an end prospect. Magnabasco,

for them for seven straight Saturdays. After going to Indianapolis, they invade Central Normal at Danville, then return to Muncie to meet Indiana State. That's a bitter rival because Ball State is its educational offspring. Manchester is next on hostile soil, then Joe Dienhart’'s St. Joseph eleven here, followed by a trip to Valparaiso and then home games with Hanover and Earlham.
