REJECT SHIFT IN PROPOSED SITE OF APARTMENTS
Sponsors Say Backers of Project Outnumber Its Foes.
As a group of Northeast Side property owners studied the next step in their fight against locating a proposed multiunit apartment project at 59th St. and the Monon; Railroad, the apartment sponsors announced they do not plan to | change the location. More than 200 members of the East North Side Property Owners’ Association, Inc., formed to oppose | the project, met last night at| School 48 and adopted a resolution | opposing the location, Today, Allen Dawson, who is aid- | ing Dr. Wayne Carson, the project | sponsor, said that those persons | opposing the apartments location | are “outnumbered probably two to one by property owners east of the railroad who favor it.”
Church Unopposed
At the meeting last night, the | protest group heard their officers | outline progress of the fight and | urge continued action to force a change in the site. | The officers are Frank O. Wilk- | ing, president; Omar S. Hunt, vice president; Grier M. Shotwell, secretary, and Mrs. K. L. Ulrich, women’s committee chairman. They stressed that they were opposing only the location chosen for the apartments, not the project itself. | Mr. Shotwell said today the group ! does not oppose the proposed construction of a Catholic Church and school in the same vicinity, adding that this type of community development is welcomed.
Fear Sewer Overloading |
Dr. Carson has received a Federal Housing Autl ty loan approval for the a ments, which would cost more than one million dollars. The home owners are opposing the apartments project on the grounds that it would overload sew- | er capacities, increase traffic hazards and overtax Fire Department and school facilities They also suggested that success of the project might weaken zoning regulations that now exist north of 38th St., and urged the sponsors not to disregard respect for zoning laws” Mrs. Ulrich urged association members to ask support of their United States Senators and Representatives in opposing the project in that vicinity.
