. ‘Boy Meets ~ Girl’ Satire On Filmland

Hollywood Spoofs Self in Movie Due at Lyric; ‘Alexander’ Stays.

By JAMES THRASHER It seems, through a coincidence of booking, that the “movies’ greatest year” campaign will be starting Off in Indianapolis tomorrow with "its tongue in its cheek. For, while the rival producers in massed chorus are praising the industry’s manifold and recognized merits, the Lyric ‘will be playing “Boy Meets Girl.” “Boy Meets Girl” is one of the great stage triumvirate of Hollywood lampeons. “Once in a Lifetime” and “Personal Appearance” are the others. The title, of course, spoofs the traditional filmplot basis —almost as dependable an event as And the picture (or at least, the play) keeps up its rain of lighthearted punches from the opening round. What’ Authors Bella and Samuel Spewack have done to their play remains to be seen. But at least Warner Bros. let the Spewacks tamper with their own brainchild; perhaps they feared a repetition of that other George Abbott hit, “Three Men on a Horse,” which was made into a movie without changing the stage technique, and turned out to be somewhat less funny for that reason. Casting Wins Praise

The Warners must be credited with a sense of humor, for they have filmed two of the three convulsive broadsides mentioned above; the first, .“Once in a Lifetime,” was filmed by Universal. Further, the producers seem to deserve some congratulation for their casting of Marie Wilson as that delightful . dumbbell, Susie, the studio waitress. Hollywood columnists have ' been busy the last three or four years paying intermittent tribute to Miss

_ Wilson’s intelligence, wit and am-

bition. But thus far the best she has drawn has been colorless heroines, with an occasional and vapid telephone operator. James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Ralph Bellamy and Frank McHugh are the other principals. ” » #

With ice cream and gifts and the satisfaction of knowing that Buck Jones had outwitted the rustlers again, these 1000 East Side boys and girls lined up outside the Rivoli yesterday for a picture to climax their third annual “theater party.” Hosts were the Rivoli and Emerson “Kiddies Klubs” and the theater management, and guests included children from the Lutherans Orphans’ Home and an East Side Boy Scout troop. The morning’s shower canceled attendance of the Indianapolis Orphans’ Home guests, as well as a scheduled picnic in Brookside Park.

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 1 (U. P).— Eddie Cantor and 20th CenturyFox have come to an amicable parting of the. ways. The comedian, after a long conference with Darryl F. Zanuck, announced that . they had agreed to cancel his contract, which originally called for three pic-

| tures. for $1,000,000.

Only one was’ made—“All Baba Goes to Town.” Mr. Cantor said he felt that the story prepared for his next picture was unsuitable to his type of acting. The comedian previously was under contract to Samuel Goldwyn, but that contract was terminated to permit him to go to Fox.
