‘Harlem Lotteries Proceed|

«= NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (NEA)— Dramatic proof that in Harlem the ‘humbers game is still going like a forest fire despite the current trial «of James J. Hines on a numbers Tacket charge suddenly developed the other day when police raided a flourishing numbers bank and caught 4Awo women who had been witnesses for District Attorney Thomas E. "Dewey only a few days before. They were - Lessie Ware and Williana ~“Hammond, Negroes, the latter an admitted Schultz employee. i Of course, concerning the num‘bers business in Harlem nobody knows from nuthin’, °- Take the Negro bootblack we -asked. “I don’t know where you can
‘play a number,” he answered. “If I did ” he added with a happy smile, 1 wouldn’t tell you. How I know :who you is?” © At the time we asked him, he was standing near a saloon where the playing of numbers is in full swing. Today Harlem .is careful—very careful—because downtown Jimmy ‘Hines is being tried on a numbers racket charge and a guy never ‘knows who might be nosing around uptown. But get in touch with ‘somebody who’ll trust you and Har- . lem breaks down and talks and you get a picture of a sprawling, lusty, anarchic business which is bigger ‘than it ever was despite law, despite Arials, despite racket investigations.
Small Fry Now Big Shots
But certain important changes have taken place in the numbers in‘dustry. The men who were the small fry in the powerful Dutch Schultz policy syndicate are now “bankers.” Former “writers,” “pick-up men” and “controllers” have taken their bankrolls out of the savings account, have+ hired other men to play the "roles of writers, pick-up men and controllers, or do this work themselves, and aré now offering the people of HarJem honest 600-1 odds, as of yore. Jf all goes well, and they are not “hit” too soon, they can amass small

over the new numbers situation. For
one thing, a small banker can make =

For another thing, “sweethearts” :

on them. When Schultz was in command these never turned up because
the big combination had in their :

New York County to escape the diligence of Thomas E. Dewey. They reportedly are backed either by the underworld or by “respectable” businessmen who feel it is safe to come in now that the most terrible of the racketeers are out of the way. The big banks are careful, too. - Their representatives take bets all over New York City, but all the book-

You can go into innumerable grocery stores, dries, restaurants, saloons, candy stores and place a bet if they know you.
