Retirement of clit Battles, last fall the leading ground gainer of the league, left Washington weaker on attack than it was.last winter. Injury to Ed Justice and Don Ir-

‘win, two more veteran backs, also

hurt. ; But the All-Stars are a trifle weaker than their predecessors. The starting squad lacks balance. “There is a weakness at the tackles and injury to Marty Schreyer of Purdue, elected a starter, made it worse. Fred Shirey, Nebraska tackle, will replace Schreyer and John Kovatch of Northwestern likely will start at Sehwartz’s end. Players from the Hoosier State slated to start are Cecil Isbell, Purdue; Andy Puplis and Chuck Sweeney, Notre Dame. The backfield probably will be juggled shortly after the Kickoff.

“Andy Puplis of Notre Dame, Andy

Uram, Minnesota; Cecil Isbell, Purdue, and Frank Patrick of Pittsburgh, will start, but Indiana’s Corbéy Davis, best battering back on the squad; White, Pinky Rohm of Louisiana State, Joe Kilgrow of Alabama, Andy Farkas, Detroit; Jack Robbins of Arkansas, and Elmore Hackney, Duke; Frank ‘FilSeek, Indiana, all are ready to step

The holiday week-end will find the Redskins back on the home grounds: in games with Louisville on Sunday and Monday. The Tribesters completed a dis astrous journey through the West in Kansas City last night: when the Blues shut them out, 7 to 0. It was the Indians’ 11th beating in 13 starts on the road. > Marvin Breuer held the Schalkmen to five hits while the Blues pounded Hod Lisenbee for 10, including a double, triple and home run. Lisenbee held the Kansas City second placers runless for five innings, but in the sixth the Blues exploded a four-run rally and added three markers in the seventh. The Redskins are a half a game ahead of sixth place Toledo and two games back of fourth place Minneapolis. The first four finishers are to engage in the American Association playoff. The season closes on Sept. 11. St.. Paul, holds a lead of five and a half games over Kansas City. Indianapolis bowlers will pay tribute to Manager Ray Schalk tonight. He operates a big ten-pin establishment in Chicago and many local shooters compete in his winter tournaments. It will be the usual Wednesday ladies’ night at the Tribe park. Action is to get under way at 8:15 o'clock.
