BOARD SPEEDS PLANS FOR NEW TECH BUILDING
Work on Siar Memorial Structure to Start By Oct. 15.
(Editorial, Page 12)
The School Board today rushed plans for a proposed Milo H. Stuart Memorial building on the Tech High School campus, following selection last night of a design for the structure. The winning design, prepared by Pierre & Wright with Leslie F. Ayres as associate architect, was one of nine submitted by architectural firms in 2 competition announced Aug. 17. Another design submitted by the same firm won second place, and one prepared by the firm of McGuire & Shook was third.
Construction of the new build--ing, at a cost not to exceed $550,000, is to be started not later than Oct. 15, under requirements of the PWA, which is to provide 45 per cent of the cost. The building is to be a memorial to Milo H. Stuart, former principal at Tech and former schools superintendent. The Board selected the firm of Bevington & Williams as engineers.
A committee of three is to de-|
termine the wage scale fo be paid. Board members named August C.
Bohlen to the committee, and asked | that Governor Townsend and the]:
State Federation of Labor president name the other two.
Night School Plan Approved
Recommendation of Superintendent DeWitt S. Morgan that Tech
night schools be placed .on a fee
basis was accepted. can Under suspension of rules, the board adopted a resolution for a $135,000_ bond issue for a new grade school. The school is to cost about $240,000, of which $105,000 is to be a Federal grant. Meanwhile, members of the Citizens’ School Committee prepared to seek the election of School Board candidates which they indorsed yesterday. Those chosen included two Republicans, two Democrats and an Independent. While no objection was made at the meeting to the names submitted for indorgement, several objections were voiced as to the method employed in their selection, An Irvington group charged that * only a small portion of the Citizens Committee had had any voice in the selection, and that the method was not “democratic and appeared to be dictatorial.” On motion of Toney Flack, West Side publisher and committee member, it was decided that in the future the entire committee would participate in selection of candidates. The Committee’s slate includes Mrs. Carl J. Manthei, 1015 Churchman Ave,;. Roscoe Conkle, 193¢ W. Michigan St.; Harvey B. Hartsock, 59 N. Hawthorne Lane; Evans Woollen Jr., and Theodore L. Locke, 5210 Washington Blvd. : Mrs. Manthei, Mr. Hartsock and Mr. Woollen will seek four-year terms starting next Jan. 1, while Mr. Conkle and Mr. Locke will seek similar terms starting in 1941.
