Gay-Colored New Fall Jackets to Be F itted and Slightly Longer
a
Nubby black wool is accented with shiny black silk braid binding and braid-covered novelty buttons in this softly tailored fall suit. The gored skirt flares softly at the hemline, and the hand-made blouse is of white silk crepe with a high neckline.
By MARIAN YOUNG
. NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (NEA).—The majority of the jackets of new fall suits are fitted and are slightly longer than formerly. Skirts are slim—although Molyneux features gored ones, and Lanvin uses pleats lavishly. Tweeds for town are talked about. Color is the biggest news of all. And the square look is something not to be ignored by any means. Suits, like the majority of fall and ¢-
winter fashions, dramatize the
figure. Longish jackets emphasize the smallness of the waistline, accent the bosom and give shoulders a broad look which makes hips seem slender. Shorter, boxy jackets are essentially youthfui,
»
These, too, make hips seem tiny. The strictly tailored, classic suit, in heavy tweeds for country and lighter ones for town, is still very much in the limelight. The softer tailleur, in zephyr light tweed, in smooth wools and in rough ones,
Helen Cookman, American designer, created the smart fall suit at
left. It’s of black wool with a collar of black Persian lamb. The coat has two rows of buttons down the front and a peplum with ong flaring
pleat in the center at the back. Schiaparelli’s unside-down pockets made -

and dressier models, usually fur trimmed, are featured.
There are three-piece suits, of course, a few cape suits, ensembles which include dresses and separate jackets, often fur-trimmed or lined with fur. Indeed, with such a variety of styles from which to pick and choose, no customer ought to have the slightest difficulty finding a suit. she really will love. You can have a black, brown or gray suit if you like. But before you decide in favor of such a practical though not especially imaginative idea, look at the array of colors.
Consider teal blue (that new greenish-blue shade) for a two-piece tweed suit to wear under a mustard coat. The coat would be stunning over either black or brown dresses. Red barn is a color that’s creating a sensation. And plum, wine and
sage green look new. Any of these can be worn with black accessories.
If you do pick a dark, conservative suit, enliven it with blouses in gay colors. One of scarlet satin
would be handsome with black. A |
mustard yellow or pink and gray striped blouse would be lovely with gray. Mulberry would be charming with sage green. Or how about olive green with plum? (The last suggestion takes us right away from conservatism back to color, we admit. But once you've seen the array of new fall shades, you'll understand why we can’t help being enthusiastic.)
