The International Music Festival at Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, is showing us, among other things, the difference between demagogs and artists. ss ® In contrast to the timeless, universal message of music (an implication inteded in the above para-|-graphs) we have the contemporary American work selected by Howard Barlow for his broadcast tomorrow (1 p. m,,, CBS-WFBM). This composition, which is by Edwin’ Gerschefski of Bridgeport, Conn., bears the cryptic title of “Save the Saugatuck.” Now, as you doubtless know, the Saugatuck is a Connecticut river. Mr. : Gerschefski, it would seem, has begun where Strauss, with his “Beautiful Blue Danube,” and Ferde Grofe, with his “Mississippi River,” left off. Not only does he celebrate the stream's beauty, he also pleads against the advances of industrial developments on its banks. If the trend catches on, we may expect, any time now, someone's “Tear Down the Billboards” Suite

Close Biographical material has been provided by Louise Taber, friend of the late composer. According to publicity, the program “will reveal for the first time the reason for Mascagni’s failure as a great composer after his glorious start.” It has seemed evident for quite some time that “Cavalleria” succeeded because of its libretto. The early popularity probably was increased by the relief this sanguine, earthy melodrama afforded after too great a dose of mythology by Wagner and his imitators Likewise it seemed clear that Mscagni’s further efforts were hampered by poor libretti and the fact that the composer apparently had exhausted a rather tawdry and shallow medolic gift in his youthful triumph. But maybe tomorrow's broadcast will throw a new light on the matter. . » 2 =»

Three weeks from tomorrow, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will return to the air for its fifth season on Sunday night, motor-sponsored programs. According to the prospectus, programs, conductors and soloists will be little different from former years. There will be three new soloists, ‘however: Richard Tauber, Jussi Bjoerling and Beniamino Gigli. Mr. Bjoerling is the young Swedish tenor who was brought to this country last year for the competing General Motors Sunday concert, which expired at the New Year. ‘Mr. Gigli, of course, is the old Metropolitan tenor who will be back at his former haunts in 1938-39. Listed conductors are John Barbirolli, Jose Iturbi, Eugene Ormandy and Fritz Reiner, with Wilfred Pelletier and Franco Ghione, the Detroiters’ regular conductor, down for guest appearances. The other soloists include John Charles. Thomas (again the guest artist), Gladys ‘Swarthout, Amparo and Jose Iturbi,
