Taylor Shines in ‘The Crowd Roars’:

Ted Fio Rito Heads Lyric Show: :

Charlie Almost Meets His Match

Loo? $s Picture’ Maios A Fast Pace: Cast Brilliant. *

a

Last year M-G-M decided that Robert’ Taywr’'s glamour-boy reputation had to be squashed. He was sent to England to make “A Yank at Oxford”—an experiment that worked well. ‘When he returned he was cast’ in “The Crowd Roars,” now showing.at Loew's. If the first picture marked Pavior as a he-man, this new one establishes him as a fine actor. His characterization of Tommy McCoy, a courageous young man with a terrific right-hand punch and an irresponsible father-manag-er ‘is the hest thing he has done. Frank Morgan, the sympathetic but vacillating parent who, after losing heavily at the races, sells his son’s | contract to gambler Edward Arnold, | gives one of his finest performances.

Gargan Is Effective

‘Fffective is William Gargan, suply the light-heavyweight champion of the world, who teaches Tayler his “lucky” punch and who, subsequently, because of lack of funds, is forced to fight his pupil when the regular opponent breaks a hand. The result of that meeting is as tragic. as the final episodes are exciting. Before his biggest fight his sweetheart, Maureen O’Sullivan, is held by kidnapers “who warn Taylor that he must lose in the eighth round. Unless he does. he may not see his father and Maureen again. As Taylor is being beaten, Maureen escapes and speeds toward Madison - Square Garden. You're positive she’ll reach there before the start of the eighth round, but nevertheless, on the edge of your seat, you're afraid she won't. It’s one of those “here comes the Marines!” finishes and pure Hollywood hokum—but everyone loves it.

He Looks Like a Fighter

Little effort- has been made to capitalize on Taylor’s beauty. When he fights he looks like a fighter instead of a romantic leading man. As in some actual - fight cards where the preliminaries are as good as the main go, the supporting cast here matches their star blow for blow. Lionel Stander and Nat Pendleton, who have made many an otherwise dull picture noteworthy, perform brilliantly.

M'CARTHY HAS RIVAL FOR ONCE

RITICS claiming that HollyA wood ‘is becoming tradition- - bound and afraid to experiment will receive a minor rebuttal when they see “Letter of Introduc-

. Preceding each motion picture is a foreword containing the names | of almost everyone connected with | its production. Little attention is paid them by most audiences but! one name worthy of observation is! that of Slavko Vorkapich—montage expert. In this picture. he uses a flashback device to cover long periods of time within a few seconds. Within the last year or so Vorkapich’s montage effects have aided in making many an M-G-M film artistically significant. His treatment of Taylor's career from boyhood until he reaches ring prominence is ex- | cellent. It’s really a grand picture.

tion” currently showing at the Circle. : For without the usual buildup by spectacular first nights, footprints in Grauman’s cement patio and bombardment of adjectives, a new actor is introduced. He is simply sneaked in in the middle of the picture. And his performance is pleasing to all but one—Charlie McCarthy. The new actor ‘is Mortimer Snerd, a shy, buck-tooth, strawhaired dummy who mumbles his lines and steals the show from Charlie temporarily—but . only temporarily. ® » 2

HARLIE is rescued by his stooge Edgar Bergen, at the beginning of the story, when the theatrical boarding house in which they live catches fire. A letter of introduction—hence the title—belonging to Kay Martin (Andrea Leeds) is: retrieved by . Barry Paige (George Murphy).

The homeless trio is sheltered by Barry in his nearby rooms. Kay takes her letter to John Mannering, an aging big-time matinee idol, a part in which Adolphe Menjou is well cast. In reading the letter he discovers that Kay is his daughter by one of his numerous former marriages. They agree, for Mannering’s sake to keep their relationship secret. And thus, jealousies flourish. Lydia Hoyt, Mannering’s latest attachment, breaks their engagement. Barry, endeared with Kay's charms, - is suspicious of Mannering. = » 2 HARLIE, . meanwhile, quips his way into Mannering’s in‘terest and a large party is staged where celebrities flock to hear the latest find, a needy ventriloquist and his impertinent dummy. This is the movie version of the now-famous party given by Elsa Maxwell where Edgar Bergen's

other. indication that direction, not stars or a novel story, is, what makes a picture. Arleen Whelan, an Irish immigrant traveling second class, wan-

‘watch the boat's elite. She attracts the attention of three persons— Don Ameche, war correspondent; Gilbert Roland, handsome taxevading gangster, and a boorish, small-town mayor, Raymond Walburn. : From this ‘point the film needs good direction, less story. The plot becomes illogical when Arleen is detained for immigration authorities for slapping the overamorous Walburn. To make the plot jell it 5 -necessary to detain additional persons at Ellis Island. Roland’s passport is irregular, Binnie Barnes’ reputation will not pass scrutiny, ‘and Pritz Leiber has no passport. Other pas- | sengers have corresponding difficulties.

It’s a Bit’ Complicated

Also at Ellis Island are a.group of plug-uglies: waiting deportation. Amorig them is Lyle Talbot, Arleen’s fiance, and his elder brother; Sidney Blackmer. At a hearing before the examining board Ameche testifies that ‘he loves Arleen, although she ‘denies any affection for him. Talbot refuses to marry her, and she is ordered deported. The following day ‘is the Fourth of July— appropriate flag-waving—so Ameche and other newspapermen rush over to Jersey to compel -Walburn to retract his charges. During their absence a riot breaks out among the deportees. Binnie Barnes has escaped by swimming and reaches shore in time to complicate the plot by stopping a romance between her daughter

and an undesirable : suitor. , Mean- { while, Roland persuades Arleen to lett him smuggle her into the

country. Ameche, learning of this, tries to reach Arleen in the women’s quarters and is arrested. In the prison block the deportees use Ameche to cover their attempted break.

act received praise from sophisticate Noel Coward and resulted in a radio series with Rudy Vallee.

-In the movie, Just as in real life, the horn of plenty flowed from then on. Menjou fans will welcome his excellent characterization in his latest effort.

Refreshing, too, is the restraint shown by Director Walter M. Stahl in glamourizing Miss Leeds. He might have been tempted to divert his. audience’s attention from the too-familiar theme — from candle light to marquee lights — by concentrating much kleig on her features in the Mar- | lene Deifrich fashion. But he didn’t and the result is com-. mendable.
