~ UPTO 1POINTIN - 6TH DAY'S DROP

Industrial Average Down ‘Nearly 10 Under Last — Week’s Mark.

NEW YORK, Aug. 13 (U. P)— Stocks eased fractions to a point in light trading today, rourding out a full week of decline. Last Saturday, the list made new

highs for the year with the industrial average closing at 145.67. At the close today this average stood

“at 136.21.

Volume was light today after yesterday’s spurt of activity to the largest total since July 27. Bonds made an irregular decline in moderate turnover. Cotton futures fluctuated in a narrow range. Commodities were idle because of the usual Saturday market closings. Tht copper industry had a favorable statistical report, showing exports the highest of the year, production down and consumption up for July. The rubber association reported higher consumption of rubber in July.

Department Sales Down

Department store sales in the week ended Aug. 5 were reported off 12 per cent from the corresponding week of last year. A Richmond, Va. dispatch said the rayon unit of du Pont’s Ampthill plant had recalled nearly all the normal force of 2500 workers to a five-day week. Pittsburgh reported that its steel plants would begin next week at 30 per cent of capacity, up 2 points from the present rate. Steel shares were supported late in the session. Bethlehem came back from a half point decline and U. S. Steel did likewise. Chrysler rallied from a decline of more than a point and General Motors firmed from its low. Rail issues sagged and then rallied. Near the close, N. Y. Central was unchanged and others were down small amounts. Delaware& Hudson registered a small gain. Utility issues were dull at minor declines. Rubbers were aided by the consumption report and U. S. Rubber issues registered small gains. A few issues moved widely. Ingersoll Rand on a few transactions lost 3 points. International Harvestér declined more than a point. Mail order shares, recent weak spots, rallied moderately.

Two ‘Darices for Radio’ to Feature

Barlow Music Program Tomorrow; ‘Freccia to Conduct Stadium Finale

~ Drama by Young Author.

Howard ‘Barlow’s “Everybody's Music” programs continues to be the principal item of summer rausic news. Tomorrow's concert at 1 p. mt over WFBM marks the half-way mark in the series devoted to six compositions written for the Second Columbia Composers’ Commission and will feature the world premiere of “Two Dances for Radio” by Quincy Porter. In the analysis of the composition Porter has given the condiictor, he indicates that the “technique of jazz orchestrators” has provided a model for him in writing to suit the strictly modern demands of broadcasting.

who was a pupil of d'Indy and Ernest Bloch and Professor of Music at Vassar College, writes: ~ “It is not surprising that presentday composers should be keenly interested in recent discoveries made by science. The radio and the phonograph are giving music the largest audience it has ever had, which means that the composer cannot well afford to be oblivious to the particular problems presented by the microphone, nor can he fail to consider the contrast between the. listener at home and the one in the

Tone Contrast Intensified

“The contrast in color between the smooth tone of high saxophones gnd the darker color of the muted trumpets is but one example of an effect which is intensified by the loudspeaker. “In the first dance there is a decided continuity of mood, with very little dynamic contrast. A short middle section, containing a new rhythmie pattern, slightly more jazzy in character, provides variation. The second dance is much faster, Here /the differences in the setting of the ideas are greater and the dynamic changes more pronounced.” Preceding the performance of this 20th Century work, Mr. Barlow will conduct - Mozart's “Magic Flute” Overture and the so-called “Italian” Symphony of Mendelssohn.

Little of Italian About It

There is nothing particularly Italian: about ‘it, except that the Finale is a Saltarello (an Italian dance of the Tarantella type). It has been argued that the slow movement represents a Pilgrim's March with a possible Roman background, but Ignaz Moscheles, the noted pianist friend of Mendelssohn, insisted that the composer had in mind an old Bohemian folk-song. F

. » 2 ; Massimo Freccia, the young Italian conductor who made his American debut July 17 over the Co-

engaged to conduct the final Lewisohn Stadium broadcast tomorrow at 6:30 p. m., CBS- M. Mr. Freccia, although trained in Florence in violin playing, showed a greater disposition for conducting. At 25 he had conducted the major orchestras in Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Warsaw, and Praha. In 1933, he became the Budapest Symphony Orchestra director and two years later did.a series of concerts at La Scala. Previous to his arrival in America, he directed at the Augusteo in Rome. He will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Weber's “Euryanthe” Overture; “Death and Transfiguration” by Strauss, and the Seventh Symphony of Beethoven. Carleton Smith, critic and author, who has been Columbia’s commentator throughout the eight-week series, again will be present.
