New Marmon-Herrington Co. T rack Laying Tractor, Used i in Movie, Makes Debut Here

company officials said, until after production of a motion picture “Army Girl,” in which the new vehicle played a “stellar” role. Although intended for industrial use the tractor took on an armament atmosphere in the new picture. The picture company order for the new tractor called for shipment “by air mail” however, the threeton vehicle was shipped by railway express at a “staggering” cost, officials said. Spectators at “shootings” of the picture wondered why the tractor was not flown to Hollywood under its own power, for it actually “takes off” the ground several times in the different scenes, jumping ditches, hurtling stone walls, rolling down cliffs, fording streams, and doing other stunts. Can Be Converted Into Tank

The tractor may be converted quickly into an extremely versatile military tank, simply by adding a superstructure of armored steel and mounting machine guns, officials said. It can develop ‘a speed of more than 30 miles an hour. Instead of the conventional jointed steel track, it uses a track consisting of a band of specially developed rubber reinforced with steel cable, which incorporates a new principle of spring _suspension designed by MarmonHerrington engineers. The new unit will “turn on a dime,” backing and steering even more effectively than an automobile. Its rubber track gives it increased traction in deep sand, mud or snow. The vibration and clatter of steel block tracks are eliminated. ; . Among other tractor and all-wheel-drive truck productions of Marmon-Herrington, are conversions of truck, commercial and pas.senger models of the Ford Motor Co. to all-wheel drives. One of the company’s latest "developments is the “Marsh Buggy.” This vehicle, a converted Ford truck with allwheels driving, is mounted on immense, low-pressure balloon tires which enable it to almost “float”

over- very marshy or sandy ground. It is arousing much interest among oil men, explorers and road builders, officials said.

Ford Tests New Type Truck

The latest development of the’ Ford Motor Co., a V-8 cab-over-engine truck, is putting miles behind itself and Indianapolis today on a 30-day economy test run over Indiana and Illinois highways.

During the run the new unit will pass through Indiana and Illinois sn included ‘in the Indianapolis branch territory. It is painted white and lettered in black and loaded with Ford parts, representing a payload of 11,910 pounds. The test unit has a 101-inch wheelbase and is a stake platform model. The test was started Monday by R. L. Allen, newly appointed manager of the Indianapolis branch of the Ford Motor Co. H. W. Spooner, assistant manager and other officials 6f the company were also present. Construction of the cab-over-engine truck is the same as the conventional models except for the changes made necessary by the cab-over-engine design. ‘Most major parts, such as power plant, rear axle, rear springs and steering gear are interchangeable. The new truck, although intro-

duced only two months ago, has gained widespread popularity, company officials said. It is available also in the 134-inch and 157-inch wheelbase classifications. The former wheelbase is available in the stake truck and chassis with cab models ‘while the latter wheelbase is available only as a chassis with cab. A 101-inch wheelbase is available in stake, dump and chassis with cab.

Bantam Co. Introduces 3 New Models
