~ O’DANIEL WINS BEST BOOSTER ROLE IN TEXAS

Observers Declare Nominee Is Salesman, No Second Huey Long.

FT. WORTH, Tex, Aug. 11 (U. P)—W. Lee O’Daniel, Democratic nominee for Governor, is away to a rousing start in his campaign to “sell Texas” to the nation.

The fiour merchant campaigned with a fiddle band that played the hillbilly songs he wrote. His platform was for more liberal pensions and a tenfold increase in the business of the state. By increasing the taxable wealth, he explained, the ‘money could be raised for bigger pensions with no increase in taxes.

Mr. O’Daniel’s victory stunned the state’s old-line politicians, but . the candidate lost no time in his sales campaign. He accepted an invitation to speak over a network of 108 radio stations throughout the nation. The talk was mainly about the beauties of Texas. The nominee once was president of the Ft. Worth Chamber of Commerce and is konwn as a business executive. His nomination boomed orders for the flour that he sells, but Mr. O’Daniel took the rush of orders and came back with more “plugs” for Texas—and his flour— wherever the opportunity presented itself. Texas First and Last

Offers for public appearances poured into the O’'Daniel home after the victory: If accepted, they would make him and the hillbilly band wealthy, but Mr. O’'Daniel has decreed that any offers for making money will have to be in Texas. Pat, 19; Mike, 18, and Molly, 16, are the O’Daniel children. All are active, attractive fun-loving youngsters who were thrilled when motion picture companies in Hollywood offered to give them screen tests. : Their father said “No” to the out-of-state jobs, however. “If they want you kids in the movies,” he said, “let ’em come to Texas.” Mr. O’Daniel rejected numerous offers ranging from $125,000 for a 10-weeks tour of Eastern cities with his hillbilly band to comencement addresses at $50 each. Hotels, theaters, resorts“ and county fairs pleaded with Mr. O'Daniel to bring his “boys’ there to show the public how “they fiddled his way to the Covernorship.” Whether Mr. O‘Daniel accepts any of the many offers probably will depend upon his decision on their oportunities to advertise Texas. Ad- * mirers have suggested that funds be raised by public subscription to sponsor a national radio broadcast for the Governor-to-be.

Defeated 11 Opponents

Until his primary victory, Mr. O’Daniel was just a radio personality to thousands of Texans. They liked the hillbilly music and the O’Daniel talks, which were usually in a religious vein. He began on the radio as an advertisement for his flour—and used the same tactics

12 of Shelton Family Moved, Two Others Learn Later.

ENNETH and Jimmie Shelton are hunting crawdads in Pogues’ Run today, perfectly at home in their new surroundings and scornful of Tuesday’s adventure in moving. Kenneth is 8 and Jimmy 9. The family moved yesterday from '533 S. Delaware St.—father and mother and 10 of the 12 children. Some one, Jimmy and Kenneth said, forgot to tell them they were going to move and they went to play in the morning about six blocks from home. The rest of the family moved in their absence to 514 Dorman St. At about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, Kenneth returned to the home and found it vacant. He said he was surprised, but he stayed around in the neighborhood and neighbors called police. Kenneth was taken

to win the Governorship over 11 opponents the first time that he ever ran for an office. ; Impartial observers have appraised Mr. O’Daniel -as something better than a political curiosity. They consider him as an able business man with the Irish knack of winning friends. He is not considered as another Huey Long, because apparently he is not politically ambitious and lacks Long’s political acumen. ; But none doubt that Mr. O’Daniel is the greatest salesman that ever ran for office in the Lone Star State.

to Headquarters and police sought the new address of his family. Shortly afterwards Jimmy returned to the old address and, when he found it vacant and not even Kenneth there, he complained to neighbors who called police again. Meantime, police had found the new Shelton address and notified the father, Ray Shelton, that Kenneth had been found. He said that was fine and now would tRey get in touch with Jimmy.

At 10:30 o'clock, Mrs. Shelton and |

an older son, Eugene, 19, picked up Kenneth at police station and Jimmy at a former neighbor's home and the family was reunited.
