Takes Purse Of $19,944.30

Sheppard Acquired Hambletonian Winner 10 Days Ago; Long Key Outclassed.

GOSHEN, N. Y.,, Aug. 11 (U. P). ~—Lawrence B. Sheppard, who knows his trotting horses and his arithmetic, put pencil to paper today and . calculated that McLin, winner of the Hambletonian Stake, had cost him exactly $55.70 net. Only 10 days ago Sheppard, owner of the Hanover Shoe Farms, paid $20,000 in cash for MecLin, 3-year-old bay -son of Mr. McElwyn, and the colt paid him nearly all of it back yesterday by stepping to a straight-heats victory in the world’s richest trotting classic. The winner’s share of the $37,994.30 purse was $19,944.30. It was the first time in the history of the “corn tassel derby” that any owner had sent three winners— iwo of Sheppard's were in succession—to the post. It also was the * first time any driver had held the reins on two winners in a row. . The veteran Henry Thomas, who piloted Sheppard’s Shirley Hanover 10 victory last year, put McLin tn the lead at the start of each heat and kept him there with never a challenge from the even-money favorite, Long Key, owned by E. J. Merkle of Columbus, O: Sheppard's other Hambletonian winner wes Hanover’s Bertha in 1930.
