Synthetic Air Extends Depth At Which Divers Can Survive

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (U. P.).—The Navy Department announced today that the possible depth to which deep sea divers can descend safely has been extended to 500 feet by the use of synthetic air.

and oxygen for breathing purposes.

synthetic atmosphere is the result of more than 10 years research.

mixture “considerably advances the

art of deep diving” and has no|

harmful effects upon the diver. The 500-foot depth was attained by Master Divers J. H. McDonald, Las Animas, Colo, and . William Badders; Annapolis, Md., in the Washington, D. C., navy yard div- - ing tank. Actual sea conditions were simulated by applying air pressure to the water in the tank equivalent to sea pressure at 500 feet. In subsequent open sea tests conducted from the submarine rescue vessel, U. S. S. Falcon, off Portsmouth, N. H.,, Mr. Badders descended more than 400 feet. The record actual dive with a standard rubber suit before the use of the new breathing mixture was used was 306 feet, attained during salvage operations for the submarine F-4 which sank off Honolulu Feb. 25, 1915. ' New Effects Produced Naval diving experts said that the use of oxygen-helium results in certain physiological effects on the diver not experienced with ordinary compressed air. “One of these is the reasonable clarity of mind which is maintained by the diver,” a report said. “With ordinary compressed air at deep depths, normal co-ordination between mind and body is frequently lacking. The advantages of the use of helium in diving in this respect are obvious.” Another advantage of the new breathing mixture is the ability of the diver to “decompress” himself in a shorter period. With normal compressed air the diver could not remain at depths of 300 feet for more than 15 minutes and upon ascending had to remain in a decomptession chamber from four to five hours to prevent the bends—an affliction resulting irom a too rapid change from high to normal pressures. During preliminary experiments with oxygen-helium mixtures, chief gunner C. L. Tibbals, then com-' mander of the Falcon, subjected himself to pressures equal to those at 150 feet below sea level and decompressed himself in 15 minutes,
