Today’s event was to be run off

score of 92 of 100, will then be
‘ staged, and followed by the wom-

, run rally in the sixth. Bill Lohr- + man, who had won five straight - games, was routed in this frame.
The triumph enabled the Cubs to move within a game and a half of
. the second place Giants and to trim Pittsburgh’s margin to seven games.
The Pirates succumbed to the
' Boston Bees, 4-3. Although rapped . for 12 hits, Danny MacFayden kept
them scattered. Joe Stripp’s long
fly with the bases loaded in the . eighth gave the Bees their winning
run. Vince DiMaggio hit a homer
~ with two mates on base.
Scoring six runs in the fifth the
. New York Yankees won from De- - troit, 8-4, and increased their Amer- - jcan League lead to two and a half
games as the Clevelanders were idle. Joe DiMaggio hit homer No. 20.
. After getting away to a 4-0 lead * Vernon Kennedy blew sky high in *- the fifth and the Yanks ran wild.

Sports World Joins in Toast to the Corrigans
By JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer
NEW YORK, Aug. 5.—It was high time one of the Corrigans was
doing something for that proud old Celtic name.
You read about the
Greenbergs, the Guldahls, the Budges, the Armstrongs, even-the McCarthys, but your eyes search the headlines in vain for the Corrigans.
Or did up to a few weeks ago.
Was there ever a champion fighter named Corriga)$? Faith and there wasn’t. Indéed, I can’t recall a Corrigan who was even a good fighter. Was there ever a Corrigan who led the hitters or the pitchers in the big leagues? The answer is a dismal no. Once again memory struggles futilely to catch the name of a single Corrigan who was ever conspicuous in the big leagues. There was a time when the Irish along with the Scots dominated golf in this country as well as in others. But did you ever hear of a Corriban winning anybody's Open championship? You didn’t, and more’s the pity. Football is a sport that should appeal to all the traditional truculence of the Corrigans, and ygt— well, I have just finished scanning the All-America selections dating back to the first team Walter Camp picked, and what do I find? I find the Murphys, the Kilpatricks and the Kelleys, but not a single Corrigan, and may the blessed saints save us. This black, desolate voldiiess persists in all the other sports, too. No Corrigan ever got the checkered flag at the 500-mile automobile race in Indianapolis; no Corrigan ever won a major event in the Olympics, no Corrigan ever brought a winner home in the Kentucky Derby, and no Corrigan ever fought for the Davis Cup. Sure, and it’s a good thing this young Douglas Corrigan didn’t know where he was going, now wasn’t it? At the very least it's a new approach to fame for the tribe, so let's join all the unheadlined Corrigans in a gay toast fo the sportsman of the sky.

tion last night brought Whitlow Wyatt of Milwaukee his 17th victory of the year, a 4-t0-2 decision over the Minneapolis’ Millers ‘at Milwaukee. Wyatt was in his usual
good form, allowing only one hit

scored both of their runs. He struck |:
