DEMOCRATS OF MARION COUNTY TO HOLD PICNIC

Contests to Feature Rally at Fair Grounds Here Aug." 20.

: A Marion County Democratic rally and picnic will be held Aug. 20 at

the Fair Grounds, County Chairman |

Ira P. Haymaker announced today. Featuring the celebration will be a 25-mile bicycle race, open to boys between 14 and 18, regardless of the political affiliation of their parents. . The grand prize will be a four-day trip to Washington, where the winner will be presented to President Roasevelt. aio prizes will be awarded to teams winning preraces in each ward and township ‘during the next two weeks to determine the finalists. The picnic ‘will include a. rolling

- pin throwing contest for women,

greased pig contest, 50-yard dash for boys, a “battle royal,” a drum corps contest, a child-calling contest for mothers and a scooter bike race for ward chairmen. Forty thousand free tickets are to be distributed. Bicycle race entry blanks have been distributed to prec¢inct committeemen.

1917 YOUTHS START C. M. T. C. TRAINING

Healthiest Ever to Enroll, Officers Say.

Nineteen hundred and seventeen C. M. T. C. trainees, rated by officers as the healthiest yet to enroll at Ft. Harrison for any encampment, bégan the formality of their month's training today. A few more will be enrolled today but the total number probably will fall short of the more than 2000 anticipated, officers said. - Only 368 were rejected because of physical defects, whereas the normal number of rejections for that total number of applicants would be 100 or more, officers said.

Rescued

son, daughter of Mr. ‘and Mrs. Wendell Rynerson, 4040 N. Illinois St., is well and happy today, due to the quick work of two persons at the Riviera Club swimming pool yesterday. Miss Shirley Cons nor, Louisville, noticed the child slide down a water chute at the pool, and then 20 minutes later, saw her floating near the pool wall. : She took the child from the water, and William Martz, 25, of 3745 Winthrop Ave. lifeguard, revived the child by artificial respiration in about five minutes. The child was taken home in an ambulance.

Wakelam and Mr. and Mrs. Roland Stahley are on the entertainment committee. Games and contests are on the program.

PASSES 56TH DAY OF FAST, FEELS ‘BETTER’

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 4 (U. P.).— Mrs. Mae Zimmerman, 43, passed her 56th day without food today. She said she felt “better than in years.” Mrs. Zimmerman'’s doctor ordered her to -try a fasting cure for arthritis. She takes four glasses of water daily. Since June 10, when the fast started, her weight has dropped from 134 to 104%.pounds.

Five Per Cent Reduction and

Abolishment of ‘Credit Cards Seen.

‘WASHINGTON, Aug. 4—Ameri-

| can air transport companies, getting

set to operate under provisions of the new civil aeronautics law, probably will cut their base fares by 6 per cent, it was learned today. At the same time they will abolish the credit cards that have for the last few years entitled large users of air transportation to a 15 per cent reduction from the published oneway tariffs. Abolition of the “scrip” cards, as they are also known, probably ‘will be decreed by the New Civil Aeronautics Authority in aecordance with the terms of the law under which it operates. The act, similar to laws governing other forms of transportation outlaws discriminatory rates that favor one traveler as against another. The 5 per cent rate reduction will represent an effort at a compromise between the two types of users —the occasional traveler and the

frequent passenger who now pays 15 per cent less for his transportation. The airlines are reluctant to raise the rates charged scrip ‘users too much, since most scrip travel comes from business firms whose use of the airlines is strictly on the basis that their representatives save a small amount of money by flying. Nearly half the business of the major Bes is with scrip card holders.
