Bobbitt, Re< publican State chairman, appealed to the Legislature to repeal the beer port-of-entry system. “Since the Democratic Adminis- * "tration has repealed the gadget law, it should carry out another Repub-

O. + P. state convention platform. . “Of course, I can understand their + position. - While the ‘gadget’ un- " doubtedly made a lot-of money for i certdin individuals, it Hever made as ~ much money as the beer importer : law. ‘They were willing.to make a * small financial sacrifice by. repealing | 7 the ‘gadget’ law in an effort to ap- : pease the voters of the state. © “But when it came to repealing - the- beer importer law, which has - made friends of the Administration 'rich ‘in this state, that was going a ~ little too far—even to please the " voters.” Hospital Bill Signed _' The Governor yesterday signed a : bill to establish a tuberculosis hos- - : pital in southern Indiana. : "The proposed change in the Un:~employment ~Compeénsation Act is - ‘expected to affect between 50,000 “and” 80,000 persons and draw out about $7,000,000 from the unemploy- . ment compensation fund. The ' amendment would permit qualified employees, who lost their jobs prior to April 1 and have not since been employed by a taxed concern, to start their qualifications for weekly payments Aug. 15. The decision to make the ,revision was - reached by: Senate Democrats at a caucus atténded by Alex E. Gordon and Martin H. Miller, railway labor leaders, and: Carl E. Mullen and
Adolph J. Fritz, president and sec-.

Marion County, under the plan finally adopted, would receive $308,538 in State funds next year as compared to $342,510 under the old House plan and $289,380 under the Senate amendment. Permanent legislation on this matter is expected to be worked out by the regular session. :
Protests Job Aid Change
Protests by Republican Senators against passage of the Unemployment Compensation Act amendment under suspension of the rules dealt chiefly with the fact that businessmen, who would be called upon to pay the cost of the change, had not been given an opportunity to be heard on this bill. The bill would eliminate the provision which requires a worker to have earned $10 since April 1, 1938, to be eligible for unemployment
benefits.

Senator Jenner and other Republicans repeated these charges during debate on the resolution praising Governor Townsend's policies. “This resolution is timely,” Senator Jenner said, “since is’ was de-
signed to save the face of one of the weakest Governors Indiana ever
had. But this resolution should never be adopted, because this Mex-
ican jumping bean of a Governor is going to bankrupt Indiana in two
years. ; “Governor Townsend has changed
his mind so often and so fast that
even the majority couldn’t keep up with him.” - Strikes at Administrations
Senator Jenner then attempted to introduce a resolution condemning the Democratic State and National Administration, but it was killed after he had read its provisions I ;
