NEW CHEMICAL * USED IN BATTLE |. AGAINST CANCE
Injection Treatment Used on Mice and Dogs Shows Promising Results.
By Science Service NEW HAVEN, Conn. July 28.— Hope that a chemical treatment can control breast cancers is indicated in a research report in the forthcoming issue of the journal, Science.
The report is made by Dr. Leohell C. Strong of Yale’s school of medi-
cine, in collaboration with Leon F.
Whitney of Orange, Conn. The chemical, heptyl aldehyde, has been usea so far only in experiments on dogs and mice, with promising results.
Tumors Disappear
The report tells how small amounts of this chemical, obtained from oil to wintergreen, were injected subcutaneously into 10 dogs with spontaneous tumors. In two cases, mammary gland tumors disappeared completely and the dogs became normally healthy. In all cases, except one complicated with calcification, the tumors softened and in most instances, disappeared when drained. ; Earlier this year Dr. Strong reported that similar results were obtained with mice, to which the . chemical was given in food. If further experiments on animals continue to be successful, the next * logical step would be a trial of the chemical on human patients. ~
