British Film - Here Stars Miss Fields
Circle Introduces Singer; Loew's Also Offers English Movie.
By JAMES THRASHER
- Qracie Fields, reputedly the world’s highest-paid movie actress, may be seen in Indianapolis for the first time this week on the Circle screen, where she is heading the cast . of the second feature, “We're Going to Be Rich.” : Strangely enough, Hollywood, home of fabulous salaries, hasn't seen Miss Fields. Neither has America, for that matter, until now. She’s English born and bred, and the dar‘ling of the British dominions. Her
personal appearances draw bigger |
crowds than Robert Taylor. Royalties from phonograph records and personal appearance fees swell her picture-making income to staggering amounts. Which speaks well for a Lancashire lass who once worked in a cotton mill and received a shilling a week for her first theatrical engagement.
Diverting Entertainment
Her American debut picture was made in England by 20th CenturyFox. Diverting entertainment, it bears the Hollywood stamp. Miss Fields is exhibited as a music-hall singer and a loyal wife who bears patiently with a visionary husband’s get-rich-quick schemes. Fox soft-pedals what we have been led to believe is Miss Fields’ greatest success—her comedy songs in broad Lancashire dialect, with earthy ‘grimaces and gestures. She spends a good bit of her time as a dramatic actress, and does it well. But it seems possible that we have yet to see her in her best light. The story is of the gold-rush days in South Africa of the Eighties. Apparently the Boer gold craze was similar to the American—mud and rough living and saloon brawls. Victor McLaglen, as Dobbie Dobson, books passage to Cape Town from Australia, instead of to England, where his wife, Kit, wants to return. Arriving in Johannesburg, Dobbie immediately discovers he has invested their savings in a wild scheme, and is sent to jail for fighting. Loyal to Dobbie
So Kit gets a job in Yankee Gordon’s saloon. Yankee (Brian Donlevy) falls in love with her. She is loyal to Dobbie, but they separate. Down and out, the husband agrees to fight a famous boxer in Gordon's place. He is badly beaten when the crowd rushes out at the news of a new gold strike. The chastened Dobbie decides against investing Kit’s money in another wild venture. But she buys him a stake, and we leave them in the gold field.
Miss Leigh Returns In Spy Picture
Another English picture is in town this week, “Dark Journey,” which is filling out the bill at Lpew’s this week. Its star is the (really) glamorous brunet, Vivien Leigh, and Conrad Veidt, the German actor, shares the top billing. The present film is another—in fact, just another—World War spy story. Again the beautiful secret agent falls in love with a spy from the enemy camp. In the end they are parted, but with hopes of a happy love and life when the war

Twelve Indiana counties, including Marion, have secured tax rate reductions under 50 cents while two counties have had reductions of more than $2 through operation of the gross income, excise and intangible taxes, Gross Income Tax Division figures showed today, The reduction in .the Marion County property tax rate was 49 cerits. Brown County was able to reduce its property tax rate by $2.52. All reductions in tax rates were made possible by distributions of funds from the gross income, excise and intangibles taxes which support welfare programs. In 1932, the year before the gross income and the excise and intangibles replacement taxes were

The property. and poll tax levy for 1938 amounted to $100,693,683, a reduction of $39,400,698 or 28 per cent from 1932. Income from the replacement taxes have largely accounted for this decrease, officials said.
During 1937-38, distributions to the schools and civil units throughout the State totaled $23,634,863.05, Clarence A. Jackson, Gross Income Tax Division director, said. Computed on the basis of total State valuation, an additional property tax rate averaging 62 cents throughout the State would be required to produce such an amount, Mr. Jackson said. :
