Hardy Clan Kept Busy in
New Episode
Voe Heckles Young Andy, But He Winds Up With Auto.
By JAMES THRASHER
The rise of the house of Hardy, aich has carried it from the No. 2 ot on a double feature to nanal success, continues this week 1 Loew's screen with the clan's test adventures This family series started out with ionel Barrymore as Judge Hardy, ranged fathers in the middle of 1 stream and, with Lewis Stone t *he helm. has been going great 71S ever since ‘Love Finds Andy Hardy” is the irrent episode’s title. The title is >mething of an understatement ove does more than find the {fardy’s enfant terrible. It gangs ip on him. Toward the end, Andy inds himself with an embarrassment of young ladies on his hands, with the black cloud of his father’s vrath on the horizon By this time, the Hardys should as familiar as vour next-door eighbors. Lewis Stone plavs the Judge. Fav Holden is Mrs. Hardy Mickey Roonev is Andy, Cecelia Parker, Marian, and Betsy Ross Clarke is Aunt Minnie. Out of a plethora of sock-in-the-jaw courtships and rubber-stamp musicais, they have arisen to show the movies how to behave like human beings and make the public like it.
Ah, Woe Is Andy In Loew's present film. the girlstruck Andy finds woe piling up on him with the Yuletide season. First he makes a down payment on a second-hand car and can’t find $8 for the final payment Then Polly Ann Rutherford) his best girl, is taken on a visit, and Andy has no partner for the Christmas dance. “Beezy.,” a schooimate, also is going visiting. Andy contracts to “date up” Cynthia, ‘Beezy’s” girl, and keep all rivals away, in consideration for the needed payment About that time Betsy Blake Judy Garland) arrives to visit her erandmother, next door to the Hardys. She's smitten with Andy, but she’s “only a child,” says Andy Betsy, however, proves very helpful when “Beezy” finds another girl and doesn’t pay off, and when Polly returns home and has quarrels with Andv. But Betsy fixes things up by scaring off Cynthia, going to the dance with Andy herself. and squaring everything with Polly Gosh! Another Plot There's also a second plot concerning Mrs. Hardy's hurried visit to her mother, ill in Canada. She receives comfort through a message delivered by a young amateur radio operator t was Andy's idea, his father’s gratitude makes coveted car a reality. In the course of current Hardy opus there is evidence that success has gone to their heads— or, more particularly, to the head of George B. Seitz, the film’s director. Young Mr. Roonev is toc clever an actor to be allowed 3ll the lowcomedy “mugging” that he’s permitted here Young Miss picture most cause she can mitted a

And. in other spots, vou can cut Mr Seitz’ hokum with a knife For the most part, however. “Love Finds Andy Hardy” is another rereshing, amusing, sentimental story of average American family life. It fsn’t as good as its immediate predecessor, “Judge Hardy's Children.” recause of the fall-back on traditional and tiresome mannerisms of mentioned above In the Hardy series, its pr have disrovered a cozy little gold It’s to be hoped that the Hardy fans. of whom this reviewer is one. won't be subject to further fears for the family’s future
