Winona Lion's Victim Fights Rising Fever
WINONA LAKE, July 6 (U. P) Paul Lowman, Winona Lake, who was injured serionsly when his pet lion, Jerry II, clawed him during a surfboard riding lesson, battled a high fever today. Lowman's face and shoulder were cut with one sweeping blow of the lion's paw. The incident occurred as Lowman attempted to lure his lion on the surfboard. The Winona Lake trainer attracted much attention last year with his surfboard riding companion, Jerry I. Jerry I died last winter and Lowman has purchased Jerry II, a younger lion, to complete the act this summer. Sheriff Burton Foulke and Prosecutor Jacob S. Koontz ordered the lion kept in its cage until “adequate safeguards can be taken.” Last week Jerry II caused hear panic when he broke loose from his | chain and prowled about for 890 min- | utes.

'HOOVER SAYS MINTON
IS THREAT TO PRESS
NEW YORK, July 6 (U. P)— Former President Herbert Hoover was quoted in an interview in Liberty magazine, released today, as saving that Senator Minton (D., Ind.) was trying to intimidate the American press and that the Administration was concentrating power under the guise of liberalism. Explaining his definition of the term liberalism, Mr. Hoover was quoted: “I have alwavs entertained the
| notion that the word liberal was | derived from the word liberty . . .
“For instance, the first tenet of liberalism is—obviously—{ree speech, free press, free worship and free assembly. Measured by this test do vou think of Mayor (Frank)
| Hague of Jersey City as a pillar
of liberal administration? Do you think Senator Minton and his allies, trying to intimidate the American press, are real liberals?”

CLAIMED GUN AS OWN
Coroner Testifies Bullet Fitted Weapon.
Times Special DANVILLE, July 6—Clad in a bright yellow dress with a white hat pulled down over her eyes Mrs. Etta Jones sat in court here today and heard Marion County Sheriff Otto Ray tell a jury “I handed Mrs. Jones the gun found at the scene of the crime on July 14 a year ago and she said ‘yes that is my gun.’” The gun which was found near the Beech Grove home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schuler has been introduced into evidence. Mrs. Jones is on trial for the slaying of 12-year-old Helen Schuler. Dr. Norman Booher, Marion County coroner, earlier testified that bullet taken from the head of the slain child was fired from a 25calibre automatic. The State's gun introduced into evidence is of that calibre. Sheriff Ray was expected to remain on the witness stand for direct and cross examination during the afternoon. Mrs. Jones, wan from waiting months. for this second trial to begin, heard witnesses testify yesterday that she visited the Schuler home just before the shooting. Neighbors testified they heard three shots fired, then saw Mrs. Schuler and Mrs. Jones leave the house. Witnesses yesterday included Mrs. Myrtle Kendall, the defendant's sister; Hilda Kendall, Mrs. Kendall's 8-year-old daughter; Mrs. Ina Morton, Mrs. Dora Kendall, and Mrs. Laura Lancaster, Beech Grove residents; Mr. Terrell and Mayor Charles Adams of Beech Grove.

$165 Hidden in Motto Makes Its Plea True
Gold is where you find it— And two Indianapolis residents had found theirs today—tucked
neatly behind a wall motto, whose humble message, “God Bless Our Home,” smilea down upon them as they struggled to keep alive last winter on $1.50 a week. The wife of a rag picker who salvaged the motto from a junk yard in 1936 found $105 in oldfashioned bills and $60 in gold certificates concealed in the frame of the motto when she took it from the wall to clean it. She reported her find to Val Nolan, United States District Attorney, yesterday. Mr. Nolan directed the woman to the nearest bank where she could redeem the certificates, quieted her fears of being prosecuted for “hoarding,” but would not disclose her name. “Too many people will rush in
here to claim that motto,” he said.

20 AUTOPSY ORDERED IN WOMAN'S DEATH
‘Great Gilbert,” Still in Jail, Hopes for Quick Release.
HOLLYWOOD, July 6 (U. P.).— Robert A. Gilbert, the hypnotist held in connection with the death of Mrs. Marie Colombos, suggested today that he be permitted to hypnotize persons in court—if and when he is brought to trial—to prove that he is harmless. Gilbert, who a few weeks ago assisted a woman to a “post hypnotic” birth of a “aby, was known in vaudeville as “Gilbert the Great.” More recently he had offered assistance to women expecting childbirth. Mrs. Colombos, 23, died while Gilbert was visiting her. The hypnotist denied that his visit had any connection with her death. Coroner Frank Nance ordered a second autopsy, saying he was not
satisfied with the first one, which failed to show a definite cause for the death. Gilbert's suggestion of a hypnotic
court session was made through his attorney, Charles H. Clark. The attorney added, however, that his client probably never would be brought to trial. He based his the-
