MEMBER BANKS INCREASE LOANS
Federal System Announces First Rise in 21Week Period.
WASHINGTON, July 6 (U. P.).— Commercial, industrial and agricultural loans of Federal Reserve member banks rose in the week ended June 29 for th first time in 21 weeks, the regular condition statement to the system revealed today. Rports from member banks in 101 leading cities showed total loans of this type at $3,936,000,000 up 20 millions from the preceding week. Total loans of all reporting banks showed a net increase of 42 millions at $8321,000,000, but the total of loans and investments dropped 11 millions to $20,561,000,000. Principal factor in this decline in the banks’ investments was a drop of 48 millions in holdings of “other securities” by all banks, of which New York City institutions accounted for 47 millions. Holdings of Government obligations declined 26 millions at New York City and 12 millions at all centers, while holdings of Govern-ment-guaranteed securities rose 15 millions in New York and only seven millions at all banks. Reserve balances with Federal Reserve banks showed an increase of 126 millions for the week, while de-

The sophisticate, as you probably have noticed, is radio's forgotten man. Quipping is slipping, and broadcasters are falling over one another in a rush to join the back-to-cat's-cradle movement. Tonight the church-social type of entertainment will have a new recruit in the “Town Hall Big Game Hunt,” which replaces Fred Allen on NBC-WIRE at 7 p. m. Norman Frescott, the London music hall star, will be master of ceremonies, with Jane Martin, game expert, as assistant. There will be guessing games among the studio audience, and a feature called “quiz the wizard,” in which audience participants question the ‘guest wizard” (the first one will be Harry McNaughton, Phil Baker's Bottle). Then Miss Martin, who wrote the book, “Let's Play Games,” will | choose four studio guests and put them through a course of parlor | games for cash prizes. All this will be done in 30 minutes. |

CBS will have an old friend back | for the summer tonight with the |
return of Mark Warnow’s “Blue | Velvet Music” series. The pro- | gram, which will not be carried | locally, is at 7:30 p. m.
Features of this series’ fourth radio year are to be “Setting-Up Ex-

ercises,” “Little Symphonies” and “Fabies in Rhythm.” The first will pe a demonstration of various ine struments, utilizing an orchestra's inevitable “warming up” process. The second feature will present original compositions in four move= ments, each one minute long. “Jack and the Beanstalk” will be the first of several familiar fables set to music, with rhymes by the famous Dwight Fiske. In addition, Mr. Warnow's se= ries again will include the popu= lar “swing fugues.” It should inter what can be done
est you to see with this strict form in dance rhythms.
Mr. Warnow is a brother of Ray= mond Scott, whom you've doubtless seen in the movies, and who wrote such choice tidbits as “Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Canni= bals.” » o n
Proud fathers and mothers with the famous national high school band and orchestra camp in Interlochen, Mich, will want to make note of the young musicians’ broadcast series. Begin- | ning tonight, they are to be heard in seven Wednesday concerts on NBC-Blue. Tonight's broadcast is at 7 o'clock; the rest are to be heard at 7:30 p. m. The earlier hour tonight is be= cause of an address by Postmaster General Farley, set for 8 p. m. on the same network. He is to speak on “Economic Stability and Gove ernment Investment” before an Ine stitute of Public Affairs confererice at the University of Virginia.
