Thinks His Advice | Aided Vander Meer |

CINCINNATI, July 1 (NEA) .—| William Shambaugh, a Cincinnati trolley conductor who has played a | lot of baseball, and studied the game for 40 years, thinks perhaps it might have been his suggestion that enabled Johnny Vander Meer to develop control. “I wrote him a letter when the Reds were in training this spring,” Shambaugh explains, “and told him he should just pitch to the catcher, as though he were on the sidelines warming up. I pointed out, too, that if someone did hit the ball there | were seven men behind him to back | him up, and that a good batter will only average one hit out of every! three times at bat.” | Shambaugh doesn’t know whether the southpaw took his advice, but | he likes to think he played a part | in Vandy's success.
