HOME BUILDING INCREASE HERE

Reports Marked Upturn in Loan Petitions for Small Residences.

Residential building, particularly | of small homes, is taking an upturn | in Indianapolis, a Federal Housing Administration survey revealed today. The present volume of loan applications indicates a decided in-| crease in the construction of small homes during the remainder of 1938 as compared with the same period in 1937, R. Earl Peters, state director

Mr. Peters said the income classes

buying homes at present are the $1800 to $5000 groups. The bulk of homes now being built fall into the $3500 to $5500 class range. Slightly higher-priced homes are being built near Butler University. in the $5000 and $6250 price class, Mr. Peters said. Commitments totaling $24.700 have been issued to Good Homes, Inc. for the construction of five new Berkeley Road, he said.

Housing Amendment Cited to Farmers

The importance to Hoosier farm-

ers and potential farm-owners of recent amendments to the National

Housing Act today was pointed out |

by R. Earl Peters, Federal Housing Administration director in Indiana. “While prior to the amendment to the National Housing Act, modern{zation loans could be obtained by farmers under Title 1 of the Act, and although this title has been considerably broadened, it was not until now that farmers were placed upon the same basis of nonfarm rome owners in so far as credit facilities of FHA are concerned,” Mr. Peters said. ALIBI IN SLAYING

Claims Bathelt Was With Her at Time of ‘Cement’ Murder.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass, June 30 (U. P.).—While authorities forged a chain of circumstantial evidence against yo. suave John Paul Bathelt Jr., 26, his actress-wife waited here today to see him and help him prove an alibi in the “cement coffin” murder of a racetrack associate. Comely Mrs. Margo Bathelt, her | fractured left leg still in a plaster cast, disregarded her doctor’s ad-

vice and came here from her Park Ave, New York City, home last night. “I know Paul is innocent,” she said, “he was with me all the time and he couldn’t have been up there in South Hadley and with me, too.” But investigators contend that murder was a bizarre prelude to the marriage of the Holyoke contractor’s son and the actress June 27, 1937.

Less than a week earlier, they charged, Bathelt took his friend, Charles Morris, 48, racetrack follower and tipster, for a one-way “ride” in Bathelt’s sedan. Then, they charged, Bathelt entombed the body beneath a cement floor of a rented camp. Only a few weeks ago, the body was exhumed, bound with wire, and tossed into Connecticut River. There girl bathers found it floating eight days
