boots the national debt well over 40 billion dollars Mr. Roosevelt said on April 14 in a fireside chat outlining his lend-ing-spending plans: The net effect on the debt of the Government is this—between now and July 1, 1939—15 months away— the Treasury will have to raise less than $1.500,000,000 of new money.” The current 1938 fiscal year will end at midnight tomorrow. When it started one vear ago the recovery movement still was general. ut by August of last year there began a slump which by late autumn was developing into the most precipitous in our business history.

On Values of Turkey Eggs
WASHINGTON, June 28 (U. P). —President Roosevelt proved to be more skeptical than Congress today on the question of turkey egg
| values.
This was revealed by announcement he had withheld approval of “an act for the relief of J. J. Bucklin,” which, approved by Congress,
{ had proposed that the Government | pay Bucklin $516.12 for the destruc-
tion of 243 turkey eggs alleged to have been caused by blasting in connection with a project of the WPA. Of a total of 260 eggs, the claimant said only 17 hatched. “Payment of the amount proposed assumes,” Mr. Roosevelt said in his memorandum of disapproval of the bill, “that, but for the blasting, each egg would have hatched, which is extremely questionable; that had each egg hatched, there would have been a loss of only 10 per cent in the number of fowls raised to a marketable growth,
which also is questionable, and that
each fowl placed on the market
| would have brought an average of | $6, which is a further speculation. ar ends the stock mar- |
“I do not believe that I would be justified in approving a bill based upon such | siiebulative cShEIuS eonChISIaNS. 9

$100,000 SET ASIDE TO PRESERVE FLAGSHIP
WASHINGTON, June 29 (U. P). —In response to a request of President Roosevelt, the PWA today set aside $100,000 to restore and preserve the U. S. S. Hartford, flagship of Admiral David G. Farragut during the Civil War battle of Mobile Bay. Mr. Roosevelt saw the old vessel rotting at a dock in the Charleston, S. C, navy vard last winter. He deplored its condition and Fg funds should be provided to save it.
