Baby Birth
Movie Here; No Fanfare
Film Is Attempt to Cut Nation's Maternity | Death Toll.
By JAMES THRASHER “The Birth of a Baby,” an enlightening, sensible and laudable film, opened a week's engagement at the Circle today. And it is to the credit of Indianapolis citizens and officials that it opened without any silly threats of censorship, letters to the editor and the other attendant inanities that have marked its progress in a few other cities. Having seen the film . . . it would seem that all of its critics had not . . . one can only compare their objections to the proverbial ostrich with his head in the sand. “The Birth of a Baby” was the result of obstetricians’ and gynecologists’ efforts to curb the annual death toll attendant in childbirth. They realized the truth of the Chinese proverb that one picture is worth a thousand words. Putting their ideas in the hands of professional scenarists, producer and director, they have given us a unique and valuable film. The story, if such it may be called, takes us step by step through the months of a young wife's pregnancy Her physician gives her detailed instruction in prenatal care In doing so, he certainly should dispel several misconceptions and old wives’ tales rooted in the minds of many persons When the film narrative strays from the expectant mother, it is to have the doctor make some pointed remarks to other “patients” concerning the werils of abortion, or of a prospective father’s duties of consideration to his wife, |
Birth Scene 42 Seconds
The actual birth scene, center of most of the controversy, occupies only about 42 seconds of the whole picture. I think, when you see it, you will agree that the entrance of a new life into the world is con- | siderably more miraculous than immoral, as some of its critics have | charged. All the players are professional uth King, the young mother; William Post Jr., the husband, and most of the others are from the stage. The doctor is played by Richard Gordon. whose voice should be familiar to vou as radio's Sherlock Holmes. In blood tests, examinations and other technical details. the hands of a physician are

Doubtless prospective patrons already have been impressed by the dignity of this picture's advertisement and presentation. Once within the theater, vou will find further absence of anything resembling the ‘peep show” atmosphere of “frank and daring” quickies. Though “The Birth of a Baby” departs from the philosophy of “pure entertainment” so often voiced by Will Hays and the professional movie-makers, you should neither be shocked nor bored. Thus far Hollywood barely has <seratched the surface of motion pictures’ possibilities of mass education. Perhaps the picture in ques-
