Literary Club Deserts Books for Ancient Guns.
MORROW'S the day the literary, dignified, 50-year-old Century Club gets hot and cold flashes and takes up horse-
shoe pitching instead of reading papers on Spenser's prose, use of the indefinite article or something equally erudite. On the Col. Robert Moorhead farm, 10': miles out the Brookville Road, the members will gather tomorrow afternoon to break into school's-out activities after a winter of weekly meetings when only the intellect was exercised. Quests of honor at the outing will be the surviving charter members of the club—William Fortune, Hilton U. Brown, Evans Woollen, J. W. Fesler, Charles N. Thompson and Alien Hendricks. There will be a banquet at 6 o'clock and all in all about 65 persons will attend. Col. Moorhead, the host said. The main event of the outing is a muzzle-loading rifle shooting match, for which has been collected some of the most impressive horse-and-buggy ordnance that a Kentucky moonshiner ever trained on a “revenooer.” i & ¥
LL the pieces to be used had their origin in Kentucky. and all have interesting ballistics lineage. The most difficult thing about the whole match was finding musket balls. which are round pieces of lead and which are not commercially manufactured any more. To load by muzzle. the marksman puts the round ball in the flat palm of his hand. He then pours enough black powder over it so that it is coverea. He puts the powder in the barrel, then drops the ball in, and taps them both down with a small piece of cotton cloth. The gun then is ready to fire. Newton H. Kiester. Franklin, is the reigning champion shot and will be there to defend the title. He has to show up, Col. Moorhead said, because he owns the guns— all but one which Col. Moorhead himself will supply. Better be shopping around for ear cotton because firing starts at about 3 p. m.
BUILDING IS BRIGHT SPOT IN BUSINES
A considerable increase in build- |
ing activity indicated in both the number and cost of building permits was the one bright feature of the Indianapolis May business and industrial picture as reported today by the Chamber -of Commerce review, Otherwise, the review said, was little to distinguish it from the April record. The Review reported, however, that during the month. two new indust: had begun operations. They were the F. S. Royster Guano Co. employing 300. and the Best Universal Lock Co.. Inc., employing 100. However, employment in groups showed a decline from April, al-
| though there was a gain in both |
payrolls and weekly man hours. All three classifications showed a considerable decrease from May, 1937. Six hundred and four establishments in all groups reported 33.545
employed in May as against 33.924 |
in April. A payroll total for May of $804,703 which was a gain of 1.3 per cent over the Spr! hgute of $7918. 572.
