Today's Business At a Glance
SLOAN ON BUSINESS
NEW YORK-—Alfred P. Sloan Jr., president of the $1,451,000,000 General Motors Corp, today predicted that next year's automobile business will be about equivalent to the depression low volume of 1932 if the present downward trend continues. He said the so-called “recession has become in fact a depression,” hit the Administration's policies, including the wages and hours bill, “as penalizing the operating effectiveness of industry” and contended “there certainly is nothing in the picture to warrant optimism so far as the immediate future of industry is concerned, or to establish any confidence as to an intelligent solution of our difficulties.” Mr. Sloan's statements were included in a “message to stockholders” accompanying a dividend of 25 cents a share on common stock of the corporation. The disbursement brought to 50 cents payments made thus far this year.
WEIR ON STEEL
PITTSBURGH—E, T. Weir, head of the National Steel Corp. today defended the present price of steel by claiming wage rates, other costs
and the present situation in the industry will not permit lowering of the price. Profits in steel averaged only 3 per cent on capital over the last 10 yvears and were only 6 per cent in 1937, one of the three biggest production years in history, Mr. Weir said. The industry is “in red ink” now, he added.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
NEW YORK-—Estimated expenditures for building construction permits issued in May for 215 cities totaled $77,655,669, a decrease of 8.5 per cent from April, when the total was $84,842.365, according to figures released today by Dun & Bradstreet.
CRUDE OIL
PITTSBURGH—A reduction of 25 cents per barrel in all grades of Pennsylvania crude oil was announced today by the Joseph Seep Purchasing Agency of the South Penn Oil Co. The prices of corning grade crude oil was unchanged at $1.27 per barrel. New prices are: Bradford-Alega-ny District, $1.80; Southwest Penn Pipe Line, $1.46; Eureka Pipe Line,

In a last-minute decision, Senator Bulkley (D. O. announced today that he will speak on ‘Politics in Relief” at 7:15 o'clock tonight over NBC-Red network stations.
“Theodora Goes Wild,” the picture that turned Irene Dunne from a singing, emotional heroine into one of the screen’s better comediennes, will be revived for the Radio Theater attraction tonight. Miss Dunne again will be Theodora, and Cary Grant will have the other leading part. Cecil DeMille will take charge of things, as is his custom, at 7 p. m,, CBS-WFBM., ” ” ”
One advantage in being a sweet girl graduate this spring is the fact that Gracie Allen has planned a commencement address for you on her broadcast tonight (8:30 p. m,, NBC-WIRE). uy wn Eddie Cantor had a large and flattering celebration some months back on the occasion of his “silver anniversary” in the show business. Tonight, on his regular variety show, he will do a little celebrating of his own. It seems that he and Mrs. Cantor were married June 9, 1914, And this is the nearest date to let the listening world participate in the festivities. Bobby Breen will be an added attraction. ” » » It won't mean much,
even to the
informed musician, that an all-Van Dieren program is to be presented under Bernard Herrmann's direction tonight. Van Dieren, whose name also was Bernard, is not some an=cient composer whose music has been revived for the sake of novelty. He was a Dutchman who lived most of his life in England, and died only two years ago. Though virtually unknown here, he was hailed as a genius by such friends and contemporaries as Delius, Busoni, Cecil Gray and Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock). The program, which falls on CBS at 8:30 p. m, the same hour as WFBM's Cantor rebroadcast, will have Eugene Loewenthal, bass-bari= tone: Charles Haywood, tenor, and David Ross, reader, as soloists, Mr. Ross, the well-known ane nouncer, will be heard in a Ballade for string orchestra and reader, based on a poem by Francois Villon, Mr. Lowenthal will be soloist in a Rhapsody on a De Quincy poem, with string quartet accompaniment, The concluding composition is the Sonetto VII from Spencer's “Amor= etti,” for tenor and 11 instruments, There may be some explanation for Van Dieren’s lack of recognition in Mr, Heseltine's remark that “the letter of his music offends neoclassicists, while its spirit repels some ‘ultramoderns.’”

Another audience participatione question and answer program makes its bow tonight from Chicago's Blackhawk Restaurant at 10:30 p. m. on WGN. This will be a musical variation of the current fad put on by Bob Crosby and his renowned “cats of swing.” o
