STOUT ASSUMES NEW INDIANA U, EXECUTIVE POST

Prof. Cleland Named Botany Head; Dr. Roff to Be Dean’s Assistant,

Times Special BLOOMINGTON, June 10.—~Dean B. BE. Stout is newly appointed dean of the Indiana University college of arts and sciences and Prof. Ralph E.

Cleland of Goucher College, Baltimore, will head the university's botany department, President H. B. Wells announced today. Dr. Merrill Roff, psychology department instructor, was made assistant to Dean Stout who will direct all 28 departments of the college. Bach department formerly was directly under the president. Dean Stout has been professor of Batin at I. U. since 1914 and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since 1918. He is a graduate of Grand River and William Jewell Colleges, has a Ph. D. degree from Princeton University and has studied at the Universities of Missouri and Chicago. He was professor of Latin at William Jewell College from 1908 until 1914,

Joined Faculty in 1934

Dr. Roff joined ths I. U. faculty in 1934. He has an A. B. degree from the University of Wichita, the A. M. degree from the University of Kansas and the Ph. D. degree from Cornell University. He has taught at Cornell and was research assistant to the social science committee of the University of Chicago for two years. In making announcement of the new administrative program at a faculty meeting, President Wells explained that rapid growth of the university necessitated separate administration of the college's departments. Selection of Prof. Cleland, research worker in the field of genetics, followed a year’s search to fill the position made vacant last summer by resignation of Dr, D. M. Mottier.

Graduate of Pennsylvania

The new botany head is one of the editors of the scientific journal Biological Abstracts, and the author of 29 published reports on his researches in heredity. He has made intensive studies of the behavior of cromosomes which dtermine laws of heredity. President Wells expressed his ape preciation of the services of Prof.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees today appointed President Emeritus William Lowe Bryan as the Mahlon Powell Foundation lecturer for the coming school year. Dr. Bryan will give a series of lectures on philosophy as provided in the will of Mahlon Powell, Wabash. Erwin L. Meyer was appointed graduate fellow in German and Miss Elizabeth G. McCoy was named critic supervisor in nursing education beginning June 15, Herold H. Reinecke, Indianapolis, Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, was reappointed lecturer in police training in the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology for the coming year.
