CLOUSE WIDOW TAKES STANDIN HARLAN TRIAL

Trucker Says Victim Was Shot Down in Glare Of His Car Lights.

LONDON, Ky. June 8 (U. P).— Mrs. Minnie Clouse, head of the clan of Clouse, swore today that her husband was killed four days after he became active in the United Mine Workers, and that he never had a chance to defend himself because she put the pistol to her nose and there was “nary a smell of burned powder.” The Clouse clan—all relatives of the slain Lloyd Clouse, a union organizer—came up from “Bloody Harlan” to testify for the Government in the trial of 19 coal corporations and 44 individuals on charges of terrorizing United Mine Workers in the southeastern Kentucky coal field. They came here to avenge, after a fashion, the death of their Kinsman, for the government contends that the man who killed Mr. Clouse was Bill Lewis, one of the Harlan County deputy sheriffs on trial. Lewis Bunch, a truckman and ®& Government witness in the Har-| lan coal conspiracy trial, swore that Mr. Clouse fell dead in the glare of the headlights of his truck April 24, 1937, in front of =a Harlan County saloon.

Tells of Seeing Deputy

Standing nearby, griping a smok- | ing pistol was Bill Lewis, one of the Harlan County deputy sheriffs | on trial here, the witness said. | Previously Jasper Clouse, brother | of the slaih man, testified gave his | account of the slaying. | “Me and Lloyd went from my house down to the saloon,” he said. “We went in and I bought two pints | of liquor and two packs of cigarets. In there we saw Bill Lewis and | Melvin Moore and Logan Middleton and Maynard Hobbs. Me and Llovd walks out of the saloon and those | four fellows follows and Bill Lewis | yells ‘Halt there, boys, we got to search you.’ “We turned and Bill Lewis and Melvin Moore started firing at my brother. Logan Middleton reached for his gun and I jumped at him and him and me rassled for the | gun until I saw my brother fall dead on the ground. Somebody came up and knocked me loose from . Logan Middleton and, I fell to the ground and I got up right smart quick and ran away.” That was only part of the Clouse clan's testimony. Two young | Clouses, wearing baggy coats and | long trousers much too big for them, implicated Lee Hubbard, another | deputy sheriff on trial, in the am- | bushing of two automobile loads oH union organizers near Verda, Ky. Tom Ferguson, & United Mine | Workers’ field representative, was | wounded in the shoulder on that |

Faith Tested By Snake Bite; Cult Watches

HAMMOND, La., June 8 (U. P.).— Holy Rollers prayed today at the bedside of Mrs. Joseph Rushing, 58, who lay “wrestling with the Devil, de trying to overcome the effects of a snake bite that she had invited as a test of faith. The cult’'s state convention was interrupted while the “saints” gathered in relays of 25 each at the home of J. T. Priest, local overseer, where Mrs. Rushing had been carried. She was too weak to walk and her

arm was swollen to twice its normal size. She writhed in agony but re- | fused the services of doctors as other | cult members shouted encouragement. Mrs. Rushing underwent the “faith test” Sunday night in the presence of 400 delegates after hours | of shouting “in mystic tongues” and | “rolling away of sins.’ It was said that the snake had been “milked” of most of its poison before it wns taken to the meeting.
