STEEL AND MINING SHARES LEAD LIST IN UPWARD TREN

Majority Hold Advance Despite Lag Near Session’s End.

NEW YORK, June 4 (U. P)— Steel and mining shares led the stock market higher in the short

session today. Bonds also improved, while wheat and cotton made fairsized gains. Improvement in stocks was attributed to week-end short covering and to indications Congress was nearing adjournment time. Passage of the lending-spending bill by the Senate was construed in some quarters as inflationary and early in the session traders bought gold mining shares as possible hedges against any inflation that might develop. Golds were prominent on the tape in the early trading when the main list was irregular and quiet. Then other mining issues turned up and the steels became more active and strengthened. All groups turned up with these until gains ranging to more than 2 points were general. Toward the close, prices slipped back slightly from the best levels of the day but a majority held part of their advance. Activity in gold stocks here was paralleled by a similar movement on the Toronto mining exchange. Base metals also moved higher with the golds but industrials were dull.

Molinari Leads NBC Symphony Tonight; Music Hall to Give Request Program; Race Winner Roberts on Air Tomorrow

D Columbia to Offer Two Kodaly Works on 'Everybody's’ Hour.

“Good Music” by James Thrasher

Italy's prominence in instrumental music, like Ireland’s prominence in the drama, is a movement of recent memory. And one of its leaders, Bernardino Molinari, has returned to the United States to conduct the next three NBC Symphony Orchestra concerts, beginning tonight. Like an impressive gesture which, repeated, becomes a tiresome mannerism, Italy's operatic tradition had become something of a stigma by the turn of the century. Then along came Respighi and Molinari to turn the country’s musical tide in another direction. Of course, these two men by no means sum up the contributors. But Respighi was the first modern Italian to specialize in the symphonic field with much success. Molinari, as friend and sympathetic interpreter, did much to acquaint the world with Respighi's music through his tours and concerts in Rome with the Augusteo Orchestra, and through his guest appearances as conductor here and in Europe. Gained Fame in 1909

Born in 1880, Mr. Molinari Respighi’s junior by a year. first fame came when he prepared the Augusteo Orchestra for a series of concerts conducted by Richard Strauss in 1909. So successful was his preparation that he was appointed regular conductor immediately afterward. The Italian conductor is no stranger here. Following two seasons of guest appearances, he was one of the regular New York Phil-harmonic-Symphony conductors for two more years, beginning in 1930. Of course it can’t be forgotten, in giving Mr. Molinari credit for pioneering activities, that Arturo Toscanini also is an Italian. But Mr. Toscanini devoted himself almost exclusively to operatic conducting for many years before extending his talent and fame to symphonic literature, Offers Overtures For his first NBC Symphony, Mr. Molinari has chosen the seldomplayed Overture to “Nina,” an opera by the early Italian, Paisiello; the Fifth Symphony of Beethoven; the Overture to the fourth act of Catalani’s opera, “La Wally”; the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's “Midsummer Night's Dream” music, and the Overture to Verdi's “Sicilian Vespers.” Quite a night for Italian overtures. The name Catalani sounds, somehow, like that of a great many other opera composers. Yet this 19th Century musician has a following whose enthusiasm is almost Brucknerian. We seldom hear any of his music, so you may want to listen with a little added attention, and see if you share this enthusiasm. The concert will be available at its accustomed time and place— 7 p. m,, NBC-WIRE. ” n ” For all of Richard Strauss’ musical realism, I don’t think he ever equaled Zoltan Kodaly's trick in the “Harry Janos” Suite which Howard Barlow is going to play tomorrow. Dr. Strauss once remarked to =a wide-eyed worshiper (and doubtless with tongue in cheek) that the day would come when a teaspoon could be described accurately in music. But Mr. Kodaly has gone one better. He put a sneeze in the opening. * The reason is this: There seems to be an old Hungarian superstition that the tallest story must be true if the listener happens to sneeze during its telling. And since Hary Janos was the Baron Munchausen of Hungary, Mr. Kodaly needed the musical equivalent of a hay fever attack before he could proceed with the humorous business at hand. Those who know this composer only as the source of the mystic, lofty and stirring “Psalmus Hungaricus,” which our orchestra and symphonic choir did last winter, will find that Mr. Kodaly is versatile as well as gifted. Before “Hary Janos,” however, we are to hear the Mozart Symphony in BE Flat, No. 39. This is the first of the last three great symphonies composed in the incredible space of three months during the summer of 1788. The feat is all the more remarkable since the period of their composition was one of mental and physical suffering for the composer. The somber G Minor and the maJestic “Jupiter” which follow tomorrow’s symphony reveal this state of mind to a considerable extent. But the E Flat is consistently of the beloved Mozartean gaiety. Mr. Barlow and the @olumbia Symphony will play these two works during the “Everybody's Music” hour at 1 p. m., CBS-WFBM.

" » Tomorrow NOE the Radio City Music Hall ends its symphony season under Erno Rapee’s direction with an all-request program. The Sunday cycle marked another milestone in radio music this year with Mr. Rapee's presentation of the seven symphonies of Jean Sibelius, their first complete performance in a radio series. Mr. Rapee finds cause to believe that America is becoming a nation of highly discriminating music-lovers in the requests from which he has picked tomorrow's program. Requests ranged from “In a Monastery Garden” and “L'Amour, Toujours L’Amour” to Bruckner, Mahler and Sibelius. But the most frequently asked for selections were these: Tschaikowsky’s “Romeo and Juliet” Overture; “The Afternoon of a Faun,” by Debussy; Enesco’s Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1, and selec tions from Puccini's “La Boheme.” That's what you'll hear by tuning NBC-WLW at 10:30 a. m. » » » Another of the good things that come to an end tomorrow is the year's Detroit Symphony series. John Barbirolli will conduct the valedictory concert, with that excellent Metropolitan Opera contralto, Kathryn Meisle, as soloist. Miss Meisle will sing an aria from Wagner's “Rienzi” and songs by Rubenstein, Carpenter and Becker. Mr,

Floyd Roberts, |! last Monday's Speedway winner and record-break-ing speedster, will have two chances for a few belated words on his triumph tomorrow. Floyd was so tired and excited after the race that he couldn't even say “Hello, Maw, it was a great fight” into the waiting microphone. But he'll talk for Parks Johnson and Wally Butterworth on NBC-WIRE at 3:30 p. m. tomorrow. Then, two hours later, he'll be on the Phil Baker program, CBS-WFBM. Incidentally, tomorrow's will be the last Johnson-Butterworth Radio Newsreel. From now on they'll devote their whole time to the Vox Pop programs.

at 11 a. m. tomorrow, its studios will be the scene of the broadcast.

Participants are to be Dr. Frederick » » »

D. Kershner, dean of the Butler University College of Religion, and the Butler University Choir, Ralph W. Wright, director.

The W. C. Fields-Charlie McCarthy feud is to be renewed at 6 p. m. tomorrow on NBC-WIRE, when the oaken oaf’s taunt of “Red= wood for a nose!” again will peal across the length and breadth of our fair land. It has been 13 months since the feud started. Not long afterward Mr. Fields made a precipitate departure from the air. The comedian, it seemed, despaired of finding a writer who could provide him with suitable material, week in and week out. But he remained under contract to the program's sponsors and, if rumors are right, he'll be staying around for a while after this evening's broadcast. Nelson Eddy, who also was present at the inaugural, will be back for his first guest appearance since January. He, too, will be a regular feature later in the summer. » ” ”

“The “Magic Key” moves into a lighter vein tomorrow (NBC-WLW, noon) when Morton Downey and Larry Clinton's orchestra make their appearance. Though Mr. Downey is a radio veteran, he is to do his first master-of-ceremonies job on this summer series. He'll sing, too. ”
