BLOOMINGTON, Ind. June 3 (U. P.) .—Bill Smith of Ft. Wayne, Indiana University baseball player, today had been chosen the most valuable man on the Hoosier team. A pitcher, Smith won six Big Ten games, losing none. Indiana tied for the Big Ten title.
Blues to Play Here Tonight
(Continued from Page 21)
the Blues will end their stay tomorrow night. Whitlow Wyatt, Milwaukee's ace right-hander, had the Indians eating out of his hand in last night's first tilt and turned in a four-hit 5-to-0 shutout. He rolled up 11 strikeouts and Jimmy Wasdell was a victim three times. It was Wyatt's fourth shutout of the season and big league scouts are hounding Manager Al Sothoron with offers. Whitlow is the sole property of the Brewers, according to Sothoron, who denied that Cleveland held strings on the pitcher. Wyatt in seven games while losing
Manager Schalk shook up his lineup in the second tilt but the result was the same—four hits. Russ Loafmarf tried to hand the game to the Redskins by giving 11 bases on balls in four innings, but the Hoosiers were generous and left 10 runners stranded in four stanzas.
Wild Man Removed
Allan Johnson finally relieved the wild man and the Indians were through for the night while the Brewers stepped out and clipped Lloyd Johnson and Don French and walked away with the sugar. A lead of 8 to 0 gained by the Tribe was washed out and at the end of the fifth the score was deadlocked at 4 and 4. In the seventh and final frame Becker hit a pop fly double down the right field line and tallied on Hope's Texas leaguer to short left. The ball got away from Pilney but Becker probably would have scored anyway. The action lasted beyond midnight and at least half of the crowd of 3000 had left the premises by 11:30 n’zlock. Gordon Hinkle, caught part of the second game for the Indians. He was picked up as a free agent the other day to fill in for Bill Baker, who is handicapped by a bruised finger. Hinkle has been in the A. A. before with Columbus.
Pitcher Clay Smith was handed |
an outright release vesterday and shortstop Jimmy Pofahl, out with a lame ankle, was taken off the active list for the time being to make room for Hinkle. It also was announced that Doug Wheeler, rookie first sacker, has been transferred from Montgomery in the Southeastern League to Bloomington in the Three-I loop.
