“Good Music” by James Thrasher
Bernard Herrmann had one of] the shortest music broadcast series | on record this season. Last week Mr. Herrmann and the Columbia Concert Orchestra moved into part of the period vacated by the Phil-harmonic-Symphony Sunday concerts. They were to offer a cycle of “seldom-heard classics.” Well, this week Mr. Herrmann is nowhere to be found. Instead we have Howard Barlow, conductor; Henry M. Neely, commentator, and the Columbia Symphony returning for the third summer with their “Evervbody’s Music.” They're starting on CBS-WFBM at 1 p. m. tomorrow, and it ought to be welcome news to most of you. | In many ways, this series has been one of radio's most important in the serious music vein. As a program builder, Mr. Barlow has taken a good many stabs in the 51 ff dark, particularly as regards conchem .... 18 : a Yu temporary compositions. Interpretation of Title

Crop Prospects Good
Easiness at Liverpool plus more reports of favorable crop weather the U. S. tended to restrain buyers to some extent. Reports today from Texas and Oklahoma were more favorable regarding crop prospects in those states, and there seemed no reason to believe that the estimates of a large winter crop will be materially changed. Estimated receipts of wheat in Chicago were 15 cars. Corn prices held fairly steady throughout the session with small rallies encountering selling by cash interests. There was a little support credited to export interests, but early indications from the seaboard pointed to a poor demand overnight, Estimated receipts of corn were 355 cars.

procedure, This has been a long time in getting around to “Everybody's Music's” chief contribution to date. That has been to act as a laboratory for contemporary music, particularly the works commissioned by CBY and performed last summer. The coming series will offer a new series of six compositions written especially for radio. Probably the outstanding novelty will be the new radio opera which Vittorio Giannini is writing to Robert A. Simon's libretto. The “grand opera” will be 20 minutes, 30 seconds long! Other new music to be heard will be by Quincy Porter, R. Nathaniel Dett, Jerome Moross, Robert Russell Ben-

If you have confined your con-cert-going to this country, the name of Sir Adrian Boult may not be too familiar. Head of the British Broadcasting Co. music department and BBC Symphony conductor, he will make his American radio bow this evening as guest of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (WIRE, 8 p. m.) The British batonist, who is 49, learned his trade under the gifted guidance of the famous Artur Nikisch. He was appointed assistant conductor at the Covent Garden Opera in 1914, and in 1919 conducted the Diaghilev Ballet Russe orchestra. He resigned for a teaching post at the Royal College of Music, and took his present radio post in 1932. His musical activities for the gov-ernment-controlled radio earned him his knighthood in 1937. His inaugural NBC program will begin with the “Comedy Overture” by Busoni. Described as Mozartean in character, it was dedicated to the one-time Boston Symphony conductor, Wilhelm Gericke. Continuing, Sir Adrian will conduct the Beethoven Seventh Symphony. Then, as the evening's soloist, William Primrose, who sits with Carleton Cooley at the orchestra's first viola desk, will play the Wil-

music on each of his Sunday morning Radio City Music Hall broadcasts seems a little like bringing a red apple to teacher every week, especially since his “Sibelius festival” ended several months ago. Yet the musical man of the hour isn't a hackneyed composer as yet, so the Radio City programs are a good way to familiarize yourself with the Finnish master's works. Tomorrow's Sibelius will be the Fifth Symphony. In addition the orchestra will play a Bach prelude and Fugue, and Viola Philo is to
