COADJUTOR FOR EPISCOPALIAN BISHOP SOUGHT

Committee of Clergymen, And Lay Leaders Starts Considering Names.

| A committee of Episcopalian clergymen and lay leaders today be- | gan consideration of possible nomi- | nees for bishop coadjutor to assist the Rt. Rev. Joseph Marshall Fran- | cis, bishop of the Diocese of Indian- | apolis, until his retirement in 1940. |

The committee organization was | completed at a meeting vesterday with the selection of R. H. Sher- | wood, Indianapolis, as chairman, and Omar S. Hunt, also of Indian- | apolis, as secretary. The election of a bishop co- | adjutor was authorized at the recent diocesan convention at the re- | quest of Bishop Francis, who ~aid he needed assistance. When he is | retired in 1940 he will be in his 40th year as head of the diocese, which comprises the southern half of In- | diana. Clergymen on the committee include the Rev. William Burrows, the | Rev. BE. A. Powell and the Rev. George S. Southworth, all of Indianapolis; «he Rev. A. P. Bissell, New Albany; the Rev. W. T. Capers, Terre Haute; the Rev. R. F. Keicher, Bedford, and the Rev. Reese F. Thornton, Lafayette. Lay members are Eli Lilly and H W. Buttolph, both of Indianapolis; Paul Comstock. Richmond; B. F. Culley, Evansville; Frank R. Elliott, Bloomington: Lee Rodman, Cannelton; Overton Sacksteder, Muncie, and BE. C. Steinsberger, Vincennes. The committee is to meet again on June 6 and at intervals thereafter until a nominee is selected for pres- | entation to a convention which is to be called next fall for an election.

FORD IS OPPOSED TO ANNUAL WAGE

Auto Magnate Thinks Workers Themselves Disfavor It, Spokesman Says.

DEARBORN, Mich., May 13.—An executive of the Ford Motor Co. said today that Henry Ford was unalterably opposed to giving his work- | ers an annual, guaranteed wage. Mr. Ford feels, it was explained, that most workers themselves opposed the idea because it would rob them of their maximum potential earning power. here had been speculation as to whether Mr. Ford was considering | the establishment of a minimum annual wage, and whether he had not discussed such a plan on his visit to the White House | President Roosevelt had publicly suggested such a plan to employers | generally, and it was thought that he might have broached it to Mr. Ford, who in 1914 startled the industrial world by raising wages from $2.37 to a basic minimum of $5 a! day ! The company spokesman said that Mr. Ford considered the plan feasible neither for his plant nor for industry as a whole | A few davs before Mr. Ford vis- | ited Washington, an independent | lahor organization of Ford Workers made a request to Edsel Ford for a $1500 annual minimum wage

A. F. of L. to Intensify Drive When Slump Turns |

WASHINGTON, May 13 (U. P). —The A. F. of L. is ready to inten- | sify its war against the C. I. O. as | soon as business improves, A. F. of L. President William Green said to- | day. ' Federation organizers are survevy- | ing the labor situation in the metal | mining and textile industries, but the recession may delay chartering of rival unions in those fields, Mr. | Green said. “The economic situation enters | into our survey because metal mining is pretty nearly dead,” he said. | “There's not much use of chartering international unions formed of | unemployed metal miners. ! “The steel industry is very nearly down and we haven't considered | establishing a new unison in that field yet.” C. 1. O. Chairman John L. Lewis | also said in a speech to the Amal- | gamated Clothing Workers’ conven- | tion yesterday that the recession | was plaguing his organization. He | pledged that the C. 1. O. will begin the greatest organizing campaign | in history as soon as business picks |
