ROOSEVELT, IN LETTER, URGES M'ADOO TO RUN

| Opposes Desire of California Senator to Return to Private Life.

LOS ANGELES, May 12 (U. P).— President Roosevelt has intervened | in the California election campaign | to the extent of writing a letter to | William Gibbs McAdoo, the States | incumbent Democratic Senator, urg- | ing him to run for renomination, it was disclosed today. Mr. McAdoo, wartime Secretary of the Treasury under President Wil- | son, had told Mr. Roosevelt in a pri- | vate conversation that he desired to | return to private life. The President's letter, written | March 16, was released today by T.| M. Storke, Santa Barbara newspaper | publisher and life-long friend of | Senator McAdoo. | It was expected to precipitate a | bitter campaign row. Pierson Hall, | former U. S. District Attorney at Los Angeles, is a leading contender for the Democratic nomination |

|

against Mr. McAdoc in the primary | d

Aug. 30. ! The President's letter was the first | intimation California voters had | that the T72-vear-old Senator MecAdoo had considered retirement. He announced in April that he] would run, and, on another occa-| sion, he refuted reference to his age | by challenging any other candidate | to play tennis with him,

Text of Letter The letter written on White House

stationery, said: “Dear Mac: “I have given much thought to the suggestion you made in our conversation a few days ago that you really desired to return to private life and be a ‘free man’ once more. The more I think of it the more convinced I have become that you ought to stand for re-election. “Because of our long association, dating back to 1911, I am qualified to say that few men in public life today have had anything like the extensive experience of public service that you have had. You began with the construction and operations of the tunnels under the Hudson River; as Secretary of the Treasury for many years you directed the financial operations of the Government during the whole period of the World War; and in addition when the transportation system failed to meet the extraordinary demands imposed on it by the war, you served as director general of the railroads. “These past five years in the Senate have added to the wide knowledge you had already gained in serving the country. All of this experience has fitted you peculiarly for the serious and important work that lies ahead of us, and I do not need to tell you that I always have appreciated the fine support you have given my Administration. Therefore, your retirement from the Senate would be a distinct loss to the pub- | lic and all I can say is that I earn- | estly hope that you will run again. | “As ever yours, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEV

Democratic candidates for the Senate are John W. Preston, | former Associate Justice of the] State Supreme Court, and Sheridan | Downey of Sacramento, who was as- | sociated with Upton Sinclair in the | gubernatorial campaign of 1932. | Republican candidates are Mrs. | Lydia Watkins, Pasadena club- | woman, and Ray Riley, state con- | troller.

CITY MAN TO HEAD KNIGHTS TEMPLARS|

LAFAYETTE, May 12 (U, P.).— | Clyde E. Titus, Indianapolis, was to be elevated from Very Eminent Deputy Grand Commander of the Indiana Knights Templars to Right Eminent Grand Commander at the concluding session of the 84th annual state conclave here today. Mr, Titus will succeed Superior Court Judge Fred N. Prass of La- | fayette. Other officers also will be | elected. The annual parade, highlight of | the conclave, was held yesterday. More than 1000 white plumed Knights marched through the downtown district. Eight bands were interspersed along the line of march, including Purdue University's band.

SURVEY BEGUN FOR STREET TO SCHOOL |

City Engineer Henry B. Steeg to- | ay began work on specifications | for a street leading into the grounds | of the new Thomas Carr Howe! High School in Irvington. Requested by the School Board, the project would include a $30,000 bridge and a drive extending from DeQuincy St. into Julian Ave. across Pleasant Run Creek. The Works Board tentatively refused to assume the project cost. A. B. Good, School City business director, said the School Board will deed the land covered by the proposed street and bridge to the City of Indianapolis. He added: “As to the expense of building the road and bridge, the School Board has no legal right to assume any of the costs.”
