ASTORS REFUTE FASCIST ‘PLOT’

No Pro-Nazi ‘Cliveden Set’ Exists, Lord and Lady Write Paper.

LONDON, May 6 (U. P.).—Viscount and Viscountess Astor—he a member of the House of Lords, she of the House of Commons—wrote ‘to the London Times today to assert that allegations of a “Cliveden” set were a “Communist fiction.” It has been charged in recent | weeks that a group of pro-Fascists met at week-ends at Cliveden, the palatial estate of the Astors on the | Thames, Pro-Germanism particu- | larly has been attributed to the “Cliveden set” and it has even been asserted that Government policy was infiuenced. To all this Lady Astor wrote that | no group met at week-ends at Clive- | den in the interests of anything. “As regards the imaginary Clive- | den set, some who are said to ‘be- | i long to it have never been at Clive- | den and others have not been | there for years,” she said. “I was | actually in the United States and | my house was closed when, ac- | cording to a Communist leaflet, a | week-end meeting occurred at my | house. The whole story is a myth.” | Believes in Democracy | Lady Astor said she believed in | democracy and parliamentary gov- | ernment and was opposed to all forms of dictatorship—Fascist, Nazi or Communist. She added: “A few years ago I was called a | Communist and accused of proSoviet leanings because I visited Russia with Bernard Shaw. I was not then Communist any more than I am now Fascist.” Lord Astor wrote: “Lady Astor and I are no more | Fascists today than we were Communists a few years ago when we | supported the trade agreement with | Russia. The story that a group | ‘meets at Cliveden at week-ends and | not only intrigues in the interests | of fascism but is able to force its | views on the Cabinet originated in the imagination of the editor of a ‘Red’ publication. The writer | subsequently had to produce some | pretty lame explanations.” |

TOWNSEND DEFIED BY FORMER BOXER

Hammond Delegate Hints He'll ‘Mop Up’ Convention.

| HAMMOND, May 6 (U. P.) —Eugene “Shuffle” Callahan, who once |S - floored Mickey Walker in a middle- | weight title bout, today challenged Governor Townsend and his whole state Democratic political organization. After his election as a delegate to | the Democratic State Convention from the 16th Hammond precinct, Mr. Callahan took special notice to | banners in the newspapers saying Governor Townsend bossed the Lake | County delegation. “Not me,” said the converted politician, “I'm independent and will vote for Van Nuys. If they try to control me Ill mop up the con-| vention floor with bosses.” Mr. Callahan refused financial | aid, made no speeches, had no | campaign cards and spent only 10 cents during his campaign. He ex-! plained that the dime was spent on | a glass of beer for a pal who later admitted casting his vote agai inst | him. The former battler had only one | plan and it consisted of nine words: “I'm for the working man | and his family.’
