MOTHER TELLS HOW SHE AIDED SONIN SLAYING

Confesses Part in Mystery Killing of Navy Officer 10 Years Ago.

WALLA WALLA, Wash, May 5 (U.P.)—The desire of a T3-year-old woman prison inmate “to make myself right with my Maker” led her to confess today to her part in the 10-year-old mystery slaying of Lieut. James E. Bassett of the United States Navy.

Mrs. Mary Eleanor Smith, who will be released from prison Monday unless subsequent developments result in new charges against her, said in a letter to Warden James M. McCauley that her son Killed Lieut. Bassett, and that she helped him dispose of the body.

Mrs. Smith's son is Decasto Earl Mayer, 42, serving a life sentence in the State Prison as an habitual criminal. Mrs. Smith was convicted of grand larceny after she and Mayer were found with Lieut. Bassett’s automobile.

Victim's Body Missing

State’s attorneys, advised of the woman's letter, said it would be impossible to prosecute Mrs. Smith or Mayer until Lieut. Bassett's body, or some part of it, had been found. Authorities had suspected that Mrs. Smith and Mayer had withheld information regarding Lieut. Bassett’s disappearance. They maintained, however, they knew nothing about the missing man, who shortly before had been graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Lieut. Bassett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank P, Bassett of Annapolis, was assigned to Manila. He bought an automobile to make the journey across the United States. When he arrived in Seattle, he advertised the car for sale. He received an answer and left word at his residence he was going to see a buyer his friends heard from him.

Struck With Hammer

Mrs. Smith said Lieut. Bassett called at her home and was sitting on the davenport when Maver, without warning, approached him from behind and struck him with a hammer. “It was just that the boy was starting out in life and needed money and a car,” she said in her letter, “He never allowed his victims to suffer.” Authorities, who had not questioned Mayer, were puzzled by the use of the word ‘victims” in the woman's letter. They theorized that there might have been other slavings with which Maver was connected. Mrs. Smith said after Mayer struck Lieut. Bassett, they dragged his body to the bathroom and placed it in the tub. They removed the scalp, other parts of the body and burned them.

Arrested in Car

They then severed the head and arms and took them to another district where they buried them. she said. She could not remember exactly where they were buried because they were taken there in the dark. Two weeks after Lieut. Bassett \disappeared and Oakland policeman arrested Maver and Mrs. Smith in Lieut. Bassett’s automobile. They also had in their possession the missing man’s watch, wallet and cuff links. When long hours of questioning

failed to break their stories, Maver | and his mother were prosecuted and |

convicted of grand larceny.

He reported that several of the residents did not want to sell their houses and had asked that they be moved back from the proposed property line.
