September Corn Slips to New -Low for Season.

CHICAGO, May 3 (U. P).— Private estimates on the U. 8S. winter wheat crop showed an increase of 26,000,000 bushels today | over the estimate of April 1, but the extremely bearish report wei | been previously discounted, and wheat on the Chicago Board of Trade showed a small rallying tendency. At the end of the first hour of 3s cents, corn was off 5s to “% cents and oats | were 's to '% cents lower. Previous selling in anticipation of | large crop estimates was sufficient to prevent any further decline when the increased estimates were issued this morning. After the reports! were issued traders who had previously unloaded, began to make small reinstatements and gave the market a firming tendency. Wheat receipts were 13 carg. Corn was lower, September establishing a new low for the season. Liquidation of May contracts and further hedge selling were chief bearish factors. Corn receipts were 309 cars.

U.S. MUST ‘ARM JOHNSON URGES:

Assistant War Secretary | Asks Aid of Machine Tool Builders.

CHICAGO, May 3 (U.P) —Assist- | ant Secretary of War Louis John- | son today urged the National Machine Tool Builders Association to | { join with the War Department in | a common effort toward construct- | ing “permanent tools for peace.” “In the world of reality of today, i where bullets armed with big | stick stand on the international highways ready to strike with little [or no provocation,” Mr. Johnson said, “those who love and want | | peace must be prepared to fight for | peace. “To work for peace, we must build up a strong defensive machine | so that no international bully will

a

dare attack us. For this purpose, we must have an adequate army {and navy, military supplies and

mm

| equipment for their use and a sup- |

[rosin public opinion.” Depend On Civilians |

{ Explaining the War Department's industrial mobilization program | Mr. Johnson said a survey showed that U. 8S. arsenals would not be (able to produce more than 10 per { cent of the Army's requirements in | { time of war. The other 90 per cent of the nation's munitions needs in | an emergency would have to come

{ from civilian production, he said. The War Department, he said, ha | earmarked 10,000 plants for war | production and operators of the { plants have been advised of the task to be imposed upon them in the

| event of war.

| Speedy Mobilization Stressed |

| “Our whole program of industrial | | mobilization,” he said, “must aim to | eut down to a minimum the time | necessary for American industry to | change from peace to war produc | | tion.” | He asserted that capital and labor | and private industry and govern- | ment were working harmoniously | | together toward the “common goal of national defense.” Aids for the production of the | semiautomatic rifle are especially | important for the nation's arma- | ment program, he said, and added | that the “success of our battle ef- | | fort will be largely dependent on | our ability to produce in great quan- | tity smokeless powder and small arms ammunition for the man at

the front.” | | U. S. STATEMENT WASHINGTON, May 3 ou.
